Good job, ad market: U.S. advertising employment ended 2023 at an all-time high. Employment in the ad business--defined here by the Bureau of Labor Statistics classification of "advertising, public relations and related services"-- came in at 504,600 jobs in December based on seasonally adjusted figures. The ad business has managed to add jobs despite weakness in media employment. Staffing has fallen in two broad BLS media classifications: "media streaming distribution services, social networks, and other media networks and content providers" and "web search portals and all other information services." Today's overall U.S. jobs report was a bit confusing. The headline figure of job growth in December--216,000 jobs--came in above economists' guesses. But BLS downwardly revised the November and October figures. You might want to forget all of the above numbers, though. Effective with the next monthly jobs report on Feb. 2, BLS will do its multi-year revision of employment data back to 2019, reflecting its annual updates of benchmarking and seasonal adjustment factors. I keep waiting for some bad news to report on advertising employment. (Because I still believe that business cycles exist, that recessions happen and that agencies--whose biggest expense is people--sometimes hire and sometimes fire.) But the perplexingly buoyant job market keeps surprising me with good news. So once again, I can report that U.S. ad employment (advertising, public relations and related services) scored a new all-time high, coming in at a record 504,500 jobs in November. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports ad agency employment with a one-month lag. So we learned today from BLS that U.S. ad agency employment (a subset of the above ad employment figure) rose to 237,900 jobs in October, also an all-time high. Job well done, ad market. #advertising #employment

It's not the size of the ad. It's the motion of the ocean. Oh wait, that's the wrong analogy. Hint for your job ads though 👇 EITHER - keep it short, sweet, to the point OR - long story-telling ads #marketing #jobads #recruitment
