This position is located at the Water’s Edge RTMC (Regional Transportation Management Center) in Roseville. The employee will have the flexibility to work in the office or a hybrid schedule after probation. After probation, the employee will be required to report onsite at least once a week but may be required to work onsite more depending on business needs. If working a hybrid schedule, the employee will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor.

This TMS (Traffic Management System) Senior Design Engineer position provides management, support, and coordination within the MnDOT RTMC’s ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) TMS engineering unit by performing expert level technical engineering tasks to prepare detailed project plans; project specifications; and project cost estimates for construction of the TMS network. Plan content includes design of fiber optic cable/conduit, electrical power conductors/conduit, large message signs, cameras and vehicle detection poles, control and power cabinets, and design of other TMS infrastructure.

A summary of principal responsibilities and tasks is as follows:

  • Prepare, design, review, and certify their own and other's plans, special provisions, quantity/cost estimates, and supplemental documentation in the creation of a freeway TMS construction set.
  • Perform power load and power conductor sizing using design tables and calculations if necessary.
  • Create and Manage Consultant Contracts and review their design plans, special provisions, and estimates.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation does not sponsor applicants for work visas or Optional Practical Training Extensions for STEM Students. Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure as a professional civil engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience and Interior Design (AELSLAGID) or ability to obtain licensure through Comity (Reciprocity). (If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.)
  • Knowledge of creating plans using AutoCAD, Bently Microstation or Bently OpenRoads.
  • Experience in project management sufficient to prioritize and schedule multiple projects to meet letting schedules and to manage budgets and staff.
  • Knowledge of MnDOT standards and federal, state and local laws, regulations, policies and codes as they relate to transportation system planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation.
  • A valid Class D Driver’s License.

If advanced to the finalist pool, in addition to the preceding qualifications you will also be assessed on the following criteria during a job interview:

  • Human Relations skills that demonstrate the ability to work cooperatively and effectively with the public, businesses, elected officials, and other governmental organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing sufficient to give direction, facilitate meetings, make public presentations, answer project specific and policy questions, and to write letters and other documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Creating ITS TMS plans
  • Reviewing Schematic plans
  • Performing electrical calculations and familiarity of the National Electric Code
  • Creating computer networks
  • Using Bluebeam plan review software
  • Writing reports and special provisions with Microsoft Word and Excel
