As a Senior or Staff Optics Manufacturing Engineer, you will assume a critical role in overseeing the inspection, production assembly, and testing of optical components and systems. Your expertise will be pivotal in ensuring the efficiency, quality, and scalability of our optical manufacturing processes.


WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Lead the inspection, assembly, testing & troubleshooting processes of optical components and systems to ensure efficiency, quality, and scalability in manufacturing.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement manufacturing strategies that align with business objectives and customer requirements.
  • Optimize production workflows by identifying areas for improvement and implementing solutions to enhance productivity and quality.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance optical manufacturing processes, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to junior engineers and technicians to support their professional development and ensure adherence to best practices.
  • Participate in the development and validation of new optical manufacturing technologies and processes to stay at the forefront of industry advancements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on optical manufacturing techniques, materials, and equipment, providing insights and recommendations for process optimization and innovation.
  • Collaborate with suppliers and external partners to evaluate new technologies, materials, and equipment for potential integration into manufacturing processes.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards related to optical manufacturing processes, including safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of product specifications, manufacturing protocols, and quality control procedures to ensure consistent and reliable production of optical components and systems.


ABOUT YOU

  • Track record in conceptualizing and crafting optical systems, such as laser illumination and imaging.
  • Proficiency in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V) and data analysis tools (e.g., Python, Matlab).
  • Thorough understanding of ray and Fourier optics principles.
  • Extensive knowledge of optical components (e.g., lenses, mirrors, filters, detectors).
  • Experience in designing optical instruments for precision manufacturing.
  • Proficient in documenting design specifications, functional specifications, work instructions, SOPs, and test reports.
  • Skilled in hands-on assembly, alignment, and troubleshooting of precision optical assemblies.
  • Familiarity with product life-cycle management systems like Arena.
  • Basic knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks.
  • Proficient in using SharePoint and Microsoft Office 365 applications.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-centric, and deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong problem-solving acumen for addressing functional and reliability concerns.


WHERE YOU WILL WORK

  • Full-time in San Jose, CA
  • Up to 20% travel, primarily to Asia, for supplier audits, training, and project activities.

  • Technical Expertise: Strong understanding of optical engineering principles, including optics design, fabrication, testing, and characterization.
  • Manufacturing Knowledge: Experience with optical manufacturing processes, such as precision machining, polishing, coating, and assembly.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to optical manufacturing processes and equipment.
  • Leadership: Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive projects to successful completion.
  • Continuous Improvement: Proven track record of implementing continuous improvement initiatives to optimize manufacturing processes and enhance product quality.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Collaboration: Strong collaborative skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and build positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and data analysis skills to assess manufacturing performance, identify trends, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Project Management: Experience in project management, including planning, scheduling, and execution of manufacturing projects.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Familiarity with industry regulations and standards related to optical manufacturing, such as ISO 9001, ISO 13485, and CFR Part 820 regulations.
  • Innovation Mindset: Ability to think creatively and identify innovative solutions to manufacturing challenges, driving the company's competitiveness in the market.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V), CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), and data analysis tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, JMP).
  • Leadership: Ability to mentor and coach junior engineers, fostering a culture of learning and development within the team.


WHAT YOUR EDUCATION LOOKS LIKE

  • Bachelor’s degree with 8 years of experience, Master’s with 6 years, or Ph.D. with 3 years in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related field.


HOW WE WILL REWARD YOU

The base salary range for this position is $118,000-170,000 DOE.
