We are actively recruiting a Senior Manager who specializes in the construction industry to join our NYC-based Internal Audit team.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Understand and apply engagement methodology (i.e., service quality process)
Gain an understanding of client operations, processes, and business objectives and utilize that knowledge on engagements
Interview appropriate personnel
Accumulate, review and analyze financial and operational data
Analyze cost data including the contractor’s application of payments and change orders
Assess and evaluate project authorization protocols, competitive bid process, project cost controls, contractor billing process, contractor job cost systems, union labor rate calculations, equipment rate calculations, fringe benefit calculations, invoices for correct charges, change management process, time and materials billing process, subcontractor tracking controls, project budget tracking and delay claims analysis
Identify existing or potential problem areas and non-compliance with established policies, procedures and controls and contracts
Prepare working papers, write memos on findings, discuss findings with management
Provide clear, concise, and appropriate documentation of work performed, issues and observations using oral and written forms of communication
Prepare, deliver and present project updates to supervisor
Prepare comprehensive audit report summarizing identified weaknesses and recommended approach for resolution
Prepare detailed expert reports in conjunction with forensic reviews requiring expert testimony
Assist in the preparation of benchmarking data to compare processes and performance metrics across different companies
Work closely with staff to identify and promptly resolve client issues
Complete projects as assigned and maintain appropriate level of utilization
Adhere to the highest degree of professional standards and strict client confidentiality
Keep abreast of current developments in construction accounting, auditing, and internal controls
Knowledge & Skills:
BS or BA in Accounting or Finance
8+ years providing risk consulting or professional audit services to construction clients required (open to experiences in external audit, internal audit, forensic accounting, construction dispute consulting, or related areas)
Strong knowledge of construction industry regulations and financial reporting requirements
An understanding of the construction audit project lifecycle from design through closeout
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and management
Knowledge of construction scheduling, construction claims, project management, and operational reviews
Strong working knowledge of systems pertaining to construction operations and financials, including accounting, labor, purchasing, estimating, and timekeeping systems
General accounting experience within the construction industry; familiarity with construction terminology, project staffing, and the structure of a general contractors’ financial statements
Ability to multi-task and positively respond to changes in priorities while working well with other team members
Firm understanding of construction contract terms/conditions
Ability to read contracts and other legal documents and effectively summarize key construction terms/clauses
Experience as manager overseeing and mentoring staff
Excellent organization skills with high attention to detail and accuracy
Strong analytical skills, the ability to think innovatively through situations with minimal initial information
Ability to work independently, take initiative, set priorities, and see projects through to completion
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Microsoft SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat and construction accounting software packages such as Yardi and ProCore
Ability and willingness to travel (minimal)
