JOB TITLE: Secondary RLA or Math Specialist

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction (187 + 8 Days)

PRIMARY PURPOSE: Assist in the overall improvement of the instructional program by supporting/coaching teachers in planning for instruction, modeling lessons, utilizing district curriculum and resources, and analyzing data; to write, revise, and align the written curriculum for the instructional program.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Certification:

  • Master's Degree preferred or pending
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • Valid Texas Teacher's Certificate in assigned content area
  • Valid Texas Bilingual and/or ESL - preferred

Special Knowledge/Skills

  • Specific knowledge of the assigned content area including state standards, research-based practices, and policies.
  • Knowledge of curriculum, assessment, and instruction including planning and facilitating professional learning.
  • Knowledge of and keen ability to model quality instructional techniques and strategies.
  • Knowledge of processes and practices of collaborative teams within a professional learning community
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in presenting school-based and district-wide professional development.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a complex and diverse school system.
  • Knowledge of Texas Assessment Program (STAAR), district curriculum, and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge of the assigned core content and differentiated instruction within the content area.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the Texas Accountability System, RtI process, Special Services and Advanced Academics to be able to guide teachers within departments.
  • Ability to model instructional techniques/strategies.
  • Strong and effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Minimum Experience

Five years of successful classroom experience delivering core content in the corresponding content area.

Instructional Responsibilities

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work cooperatively with directors, content coordinators, and campus administrators in developing the curriculum design in assigned content area.
  • Provide instructional coaching with implementation of district curriculum. Provide timely feedback to teachers and/or campus administration regarding lesson design and delivery that supports student achievement and teacher growth.
  • Visit classroom teachers to observe content area instruction/intervention implementation and provide timely feedback regarding observations of strengths/weaknesses.
  • Participate in Collaborative Team/Purposeful Planning Meetings with teacher teams to analyze data, guide content focus, instructional methodologies, and intervention practices that improve student academic achievement.
  • Prepare reports using available data systems to assist teachers in monitoring student achievement.
  • Attend professional development opportunities to collaborate with other content area specialists and coordinators to learn updated information, ideas, and teaching strategies.
  • Participate in data analysis discussions with district/campus administrative teams and teacher teams to discuss what type of district support is needed.
  • Work with the district level coordinators to evaluate, manage, write, and refine curriculum based on student achievement data.
  • Design and facilitate professional learning as needed at the campus and district level in collaboration content coordinators.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in campus and district decision-making processes and discussions as it relates to curriculum and instruction.
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship with district leaders, principals, teachers, and staff.
  • Provide a venue for two-way communication between the campus and the central office Curriculum and Instruction Department.
  • Maintain all records and anecdotal information for periodic discussion and review, including classroom observations.
  • Stay abreast of current policies and research.
  • Other duties as assigned by Central Office.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Maintain emotional control and objectivity under stress. Perform tasks with frequent interruptions. Prolonged and careful attention to detail. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. May require in-district travel. Prolonged use of computer. Bending, stretching, light lifting of boxes of supplies and materials. Occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
