Resource Planning Analyst

The Resource Planning and Biometric Services (RPBS) group is responsible for providing forest planning services which support client land management and forest investment decisions, as well biometric services necessary for planning projections, inventory analysis, and data systems. The successful Resource Planning Analyst will work in a team environment with planning analysts, biometricians, and other AFM operating groups to provide resource planning services to customers across AFM’s operating regions.

AFM’s team of professionals is focused on meeting client needs by providing a complete range of forestry services including land and wildlife management, land sale and acquisition services, forest inventory and design, growth and yield modeling, cash flow projections, environmental services, appraisal, forest resource data management and harvest scheduling.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop harvest schedule models for a variety of customers across AFM’s operating areas using Remsoft’s spatial planning system (Woodstock)
  • Utilize models to generate discounted cash flow analysis for timberland investment, acquisition due diligence, and asset valuation purposes
  • Work closely with clients and AFM staff throughout the strategic and tactical planning process.
  • Manage planning model data including compiling and normalizing input from multiple data sources, analyzing inventory and attribute information, validating yield projections
  • Report and explain impact of scheduled harvests on carbon stocks, and related ESG reporting and analyses
  • Analyze and explain impacts to carbon stocking and ESG reporting metrics from timber management decisions
  • Research financial inputs including but not limited to silvicultural costs, forest product pricing, and forecasts
  • Interpret and communicate model results clearly to a variety of customers, through presentations, reports, phone calls, emails, in-person, and MS Teams meetings
  • Support harvest planning projects throughout AFM’s operating regions
  • Work closely in a team environment with the RPBS department and other AFM operating groups.
  • Market AFM’s Resource Planning services and promote general AFM business development at professional meetings and conferences

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Forestry or Natural Resource Management, preferred.
  • An aptitude for problem-solving.
  • Strong analytics skills for evaluating planning model behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and effectively communicate model outcomes and project results with customers.
  • Understanding of linear programming optimization, geographic information system concepts, relational databases, forest information systems
  • Experience using Remsoft’s Woodstock Spatial Planning System, preferred.
  • Experience using the R programming language for data analytics and statistical analysis, preferred.
  • An understanding of forest carbon markets and corporate sustainability reporting, preferred.
  • Understanding of growth and yield equations and systems, such as FastLob, PMRC, FBRI’s Forest Projection System (FPS) and USFS Forest Vegetation System (FVS).
  • Minimum five years of work experience in forest management, experience in U.S. South preferred
  • Willingness to travel throughout the AFM operating area several times a year
