About the Role:


The R&D Metals Applications Engineer will conduct research and development activities with a high degree of autonomy in our client’s combustion lab and at customer industrial facilities. They will propose new technologies and solutions that lead to new development programs; plan and lead R&D projects from inception to completion; design, test, and demonstrate new technologies; and evaluate experimental data. By making recommendations to our client’s management and presenting results to customers in technical meetings, they will direct the future of the R&D agenda and position our client to remain at the head of the field.


R&D Metals Applications Engineer Responsibilities:


  • Evaluate ideas on technical and commercial merit and in the context of the industrial gas business and propose new technologies and solutions that lead to new development programs.
  • Inform decisions and strategies for existing development programs and for enhancing the technical strength of the department.
  • Work within and across organizational and company boundaries to plan, lead, and coordinate R&D project development activities from program inception to completion and acceptance.
  • Design and conduct testing and/or demonstration of new technologies in combustion lab and at customer industrial facilities. Evaluate experimental data and develop scientific and engineering understanding.
  • Will be recognized internally as a key technical contributor to one or more fields of expertise.
  • Research and understand the intellectual property landscape and identify opportunities around key areas of expertise, new technologies and processes. Prepare invention disclosures and supporting research for intellectual property protection.
  • Work under minimal supervision with guidance only in the most complex situations.
  • Write reports and making recommendations to management as to future directions of development programs. Present results to customers and at internal/external technical meetings.
  • Support field demonstrations and commercialization of metals and combustion technologies worldwide.


R&D Metals Applications Engineer Requirements:


Minimum:

  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering (or other similar discipline) with at least 2 years of relevant industrial experience working in pyrometallurgical and/or primary metal-making industries.
  • Proven record of successfully developing and commercially deploying novel technologies with a demonstrated ability to lead and execute R&D projects in an industrial environment.
  • Strong fundamental knowledge of process design, unit operations, mass & energy balances, heat transfer, combustion, and reaction engineering.
  • Creativity, and excellent interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance in complex situations.
  • Results-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to travel up to 25%.


Preferred:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Working experience with METSIM/UNISIM process simulation software.
  • Experience working in the industrial gases industry.
  • Industrial experience in steel- or iron-making research and development.
  • Experience focused on blast furnace/direct iron reduction ironmaking processes.
