Network Engineer

Akkodis is hiring for a Network Engineer (firewall security) for one of our clients in the Davis, CA area.

Location: Mainly remote, may have to travel onsite occasionally

Employment type: contract, 12 months (potential for extension)

Pay: $70-90/hr

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Network Operations Center Manager, the Expert Firewall Engineer will lead the network firewall installation, support, operation, monitoring, and migration efforts within the Network Operations Center. This role involves managing approximately 23 independent firewall-as-a-service clients, maintaining firewall appliances (currently Fortinet), migrating between different vendor firewall platforms, optimizing security policies, integrating systems into monitoring frameworks, and ensuring reliable operations and consistent deployment strategies. Additionally, this position involves working with the team on network engineering deployments, troubleshooting, and operations. A strong background in firewall design, deployment, operation, and general networking (route/switch) is required. The individual will also be on-call for firewall operational or security issues.

Essential Responsibilities:

Firewall and VPN Policy and Configuration Conversion (40%)

• Perform conversions of policy and configuration of existing firewall vendor platforms to the new, yet-to-be-selected firewall vendor platform.
• Perform conversion of VPN services to the new, yet-to-be-selected SASE VPN-as-a-Service vendor platform.

Firewall and VPN Operations (30%)

• Operate existing Fortinet firewall-as-a-service deployments.
• Operate existing Fortinet, Juniper, and Cisco standalone and edge firewall deployments.
• Operate existing Ivanti VPN appliance systems.

Upgrades and Change Management (10%)

• Follow change management processes to perform upgrades, ensuring firewall and VPN deployments are on current and supported software versions.

Network Operations Support (5%)

• Collaborate with the network operations team to support the entire NOC environment (Firewall/VPN/Route/Switch).

Operational Issue Response (5%)

• Respond to requests-for-service and operational issue situations that develop across all managed environments.

Documentation and Communication (10%)

• Ensure all documentation of supported systems is up to date and accurate, creating any missing documentation as necessary.
• Communicate effectively with the team and leadership on project status, obstacles, trends, and real-time problem mitigation.

Qualifications:

• 4+ years of direct administration and primary support activities for modern firewall and VPN platforms.
• 6+ years in a network engineering role, including route/switch duties.
• 8+ years of IT customer service experience, including incident resolution and direct customer communication.
• Experience with medium to large size deployments with multi-tenancy experience preferred.
• Network engineering and/or network security certifications are desirable; however, depth of experience is more highly valued.

**Additional Requirements:**

- Must be on-call for firewall operational or security issues.
