Labby is seeking a Mechanical Engineer with a background in fluid control, product prototyping and design, and opto-mechanical system to join our mobile spectroscopy technology team.


Looking for someone who can develop an opto-mechanical fluid control system and integrate it with our current milk analyzer and the industry third-party systems.


The successful candidate will play a crucial role to advance the technological capabilities of the company as we transform industrial material analysis applications for consumers and businesses so they can test anytime and anywhere.

Labby develops products that are based on new, patented technology at the cutting edge of food analysis. This technology employs advanced photonics, high speed imaging, and spectroscopy combined with the latest AI machine learning algorithms for rapid, in-situ analysis of raw dairy milk on the dairy farm. Labby's products make dairy farming more efficient, more profitable, and more climate-friendly, which greatly benefits farmers, milk processors, and consumers alike.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Design, integrate, and test various components of a mechatronic system of our milk optical analyzer to meet durability, regulatory, and performance requirements
  • Lead design/analysis tasks for farm level milk sampler controller integration including fluid flow and model analyses
  • Create flow control and sampling components to meet milk testing requirements per industry standards
  • Lead concept and design for robotic solutions for fluid flow, milk capture, and analysis
  • Design, integrate, and test various opto-mechanical and mechatronic subsystems of our milk optical analyzer to meet durability, regulatory, and performance requirements
  • Work with other team members to develop new optical and electronic system components to enhance the overall system performance
  • Participate as a key player in the design-build-test process for Labby’s next generation optical intelligence product line including conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design, requirements definition, design reviews, prototyping, and testing
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with other engineers, technical personnel, management, and external vendors
  • Support and participate in pilot testing activities as needed including test plan creation, data analysis, and test report generation and documentation


Requirements/Qualifications:


  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Opto-Mechanical Engineering and 1-3 + years technical work experience (previous co-op or internship experience is considered), previous startup experience is a bonus
  • Advanced experience with 2D/3D mechanical CAD (SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion360, etc.), including 3D printing
  • Experience with the implementation of sensors, transducers and data acquisition systems (embedded systems)
  • Outstanding organization, analytical, and problem-solving skills + Excellent written, verbal and presentation communication skills
  • Proven experience with rapid design cycles: making a product from a concept through detailed design, prototyping, building, and testing
  • Practical experience working on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and other wireless communication technologies (IoT Wireless and Connectivity Protocols)
  • Working knowledge of PCB design, fabrication, and testing
  • Working knowledge of instrumentation & tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (10%) to farm and agricultural science sites.
  • Practical experience with flow-systems and industrial machinery is a plus
  • A self-starter to bring a positive attitude, integrity, and enthusiasm to our team
