Position Summary

You will inspire school-age children to explore and appreciate nature and environmental science. Throughout the school year, you will tailor lessons to meet school district and classroom curriculum requirements. This role demands creativity, a passion for working with children, and the delivery of innovative, inquiry-based programs covering natural history, science, ecology, and environmental issues for K-12 students. During the summer, you'll develop and lead camper-centered, nature-based activities at our summer day camps, emphasizing outdoor recreation and ecological sustainability. Additionally, you will contribute to daily operations, program development, intern mentoring, and volunteer recruitment and training.

Primary Responsibilities

Plan and teach outdoor, nature-based environmental science programs for school groups.

Present engaging programs on natural history, science, ecology, STEM, and environmental issues to youth from kindergarten to 12th grade.

Coordinate with school liaisons and teachers regarding scheduling and program logistics.

Collaborate with colleagues to design and implement innovative programming.

Develop educational materials for field trips and manage transportation logistics.

Summer Programs

Design and co-teach camper-centered, inquiry-based experiences for summer camp students, potentially including overnight activities.

Mentor college and high school interns serving as camp counselors.

Prepare materials for summer educational activities and ensure their smooth execution.

Assist as assistant camp director as needed to represent the UEC summer camp program.

Other Activities

Organize and maintain educational equipment and classroom spaces; prepare and manage program materials.

Contribute content to the Center's communications platforms as required, such as the website, social media, or newsletter.

Assist in training and supporting volunteers.

Aid in promoting programs.

Team and Supervision

Collaborate with the Environmental Education team under the guidance of the Neighborhood Environmental Education Manager.

Ensure the safety and well-being of students, interns, and volunteers, offering coaching and mentorship.

Participate in UEC circles and committees as needed for effective program coordination.

Organizational Support

Participate in weekend or evening events throughout the year to engage with the community and support organizational goals.

Provide building coverage as needed, including opening/closing responsibilities and visitor interactions.

Contribute to an inclusive and collaborative workplace culture, engaging in cross-departmental initiatives and staff retreats.

Experience, Education, and Certifications

Minimum two years of teaching experience across diverse age groups, preferably including youth from K-12.

BS or BA in natural sciences, environmental education, or related field preferred; relevant experience considered.

Valid driver's license and ability to meet commercial vehicle insurance requirements.

Lifeguard certification required; canoe training, water safety certification, or belay certification preferred.

Working Conditions, Locations, and Other Requirements

Work primarily outdoors throughout the year, in various weather conditions on land and water.

Physical tasks may include lifting, hiking, biking, paddling, and operating equipment like buses, canoes, and rock climbing gear.

Standard school and business hours with occasional evening and weekend events.
