Associate Transportation Engineer

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Associate Transportation Engineer in the Transportation Division of the Public Works Department! In this role, you may be assigned to development review or to capital projects designs and traffic signal systems.


In development review, you will have the opportunity to review residential, commercial, industrial and public works project plans, traffic impact reports, and other development and design related documents for compliance with applicable local, state, and federal codes and guidelines. You will also evaluate and recommend mitigation measures to address adverse impacts of development projects, review plan checks for small developments, and review traffic control plans for construction projects.


In capital projects designs and traffic signal systems, you will manage capital improvement projects including development of conceptual design options, detailed engineering design, bid and construction administration. You'll prepare council reports, conduct presentations, and respond to project-related inquiries from the public. You will be involved in Complete Streets Projects and traffic calming projects, analyzing street and road use with a focus on safety and efficiency of transportation networks.


An ideal candidate in the capital projects role is proficient in scope, schedule, and cost management with managing multiple projects and competing priorities simultaneously. They have working knowledge of Complete Streets design principles, traffic calming and traffic control elements, civil engineering, roadway design, and Citywide plans including Bike Plan and Pedestrian Plan.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with major course work in civil or traffic engineering and five years of increasingly responsible traffic engineering experience, three years of which were at a level equivalent to the Assistant Transportation Engineer class.


Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college course work on a year for year basis. A master's degree in Transportation Engineering/Planning or a related field is desirable.


Other requirements include possession of a valid California Registration as a professional Traffic Engineer or a professional Civil Engineer. California Registration as a Traffic Engineer is preferred. Candidates must also possess a valid California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
