Assistant Mechanical Engineer

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.5 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.

The Bureau of Wastewater Treatment is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all facilities related to the treatment of sewage, including wastewater treatment plants, collections facilities (pumping stations, combined sewer overflow retention facilities, regulators, tide gates), wastewater laboratories, harbor vessels and sludge dewatering facilities.

Job Purpose: Under direct supervision of the Area Engineer, the selected candidate will perform mechanical engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility.

Job Tasks/Duties

• Under supervision, coordinates the implementation of the design and construction of multiple capital projects at various sites including, but not limited to, wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and CSO facilities.
• Under supervision, manages engineering consultant contracts and in-house projects.
• Under supervision, performs research and development of Design Guidelines to facilitate design conformance by consultants and in-house engineers.
• Under supervision, manages the research, testing and evaluation of new equipment or technology to improve efficiency, reliability and reduce cost of operation.
  
  

Required-A valid NYS driver’s license

Minimum Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering.
