The DOJ recently clarified digital accessibility regulations for states and local governments, which no clearly require that all websites, apps, and content be WCAG compliant by July 1, 2025. This coincides with Colorado's similar HB21-1110 law, which requires the same, but has deeper penalties. Here's the scoop. Please share with any state, city, and town compliance/IT peeps.

Attention MN Contractors: What You Need to Know about Minnesota’s New Independent Contractor Legislation In its past session, the Minnesota Legislature passed a bill seeking to address employer misclassification fraud (the “Bill”). While it applies to all employers, there are portions of the Bill which uniquely affect construction businesses, most notably with respect to the classification of individuals as independent contractors. Among other things, the Bill creates a far more rigorous test for determining whether an individual in the construction context qualifies as an independent contractor, as compared with the existing statute. Moreover, the Bill provides for harsh penalties and liabilities for misclassification of such individuals. Given the stiff consequences associated with misclassification set out in the Bill, it is very important for construction companies to work now to ensure that they do not run afoul of this new legislation. Looks like Iowa lawmakers seeking to ban books in school libraries are going to be in for it. With all of the Big Five publishers signing on to stop the Iowa Book Banning Bill from going into effect, there's a significant war chest available to opponents of the ban, and hopefully it will be enough to stop the injunction against the ban from being overturned. It's worth noting, though, that the proposed ban is sweeping in its effects and doesn't seek to remedy a widespread issue in schools that can be tied back to the books in question. Most of the stories I've seen around the need for book bans come down to a robust marketing and PR strategy to paint the presence of a couple of books as the cause of massive social ills. The groups that push these kinds of policies aren't even sophisticated in their initiatives; they just shout loudly enough to drown out the rest of the discourse until they're taken seriously. Granted, no book will be universally seen as a good and it's the right of anyone to not read books that make them feel uncomfortable. However, creating an apparatus to limit access across an entire community is only creating a weapon that can be used to limit expression in other avenues once books have become homogenized even more than they already are. #books #bookbans #publishing #marketing #pr
