The U.S. Green Building Council's Center for Green Schools recently held a webinar - "Unanswered Questions: ASHRAE 241 and CDC Ventilation Guidance for Schools" "Implementing the principles of ASHRAE Standard 241 doesn’t have to break the bank. Many of the strategies recommended to achieve target ECA rates and reduce airborne viral transmission—such as effective heating, ventilation and air-conditioning maintenance and operation; filter replacements; and retrocommissioning—result in energy savings and improved system performance. The standard can be used as a preventative measure. Schools need not wait for an emergency to be declared before working to increase ventilation rates and planning for reduced transmission." This week, Ben Moscona argues for more research into the attitudes and experiences of HVAC contractors to build reciprocal relationships and accelerate heat pump adoption. Read it now! "We know that prior experiences with state incentives, content knowledge, company size, training capacity, and desire for growth can all impact a contractor’s interest and ability to encourage consumers to go electric. But we know very little about how contractors' values and political views, feelings of identity, attitudes, and experience shape HVAC recommendations. For instance, how does political affiliation affect heat pump recommendation among contractors? If they are provided with politically neutral communications about their non-environmental benefits to consumer comfort or savings, along with tips for marketing them effectively, are they less or more likely to recommend?"

At the heart of energy codes requiring lighting controls are two basic assumptions. First, the controls are needed. And second, the controls will not negatively impact the occupants.   Are these assumptions true?
