I am very excited to start a new learning journey with BrainStation, taking their UX certification course. Why UX when I work in Virtual Health? - Patients AND clinicians are end users of our healthcare technologies, and their experiences should be researched and respected in the design process - We need to be using empathy before we jump to solutions. Who are we solving problems for? If our 'users' are ill, how might we reduce the burden of technology challenges to minimize those impacts? - If we go slow with steps of empathizing, defining the problem, ideating, prototyping, testing, and refining, we can go fast with a product that people will actually use in their day-to-day lives - I am a huge patient AND clinician advocate, and want to more deeply understand their needs and what matters to them in virtual care as we build new services - People are at the heart of healthcare...and the same can be said for UX My deepest gratitude to First Nations Technology Council for sponsoring me to engage in this learning to impact patient and clinician experiences of using virtual health technologies. I found this article interesting, amongst other things it covers what is actionable research. As we are champions of research led design I'm always trying to think how to help money men and women feel the value of research. I liked this definition of actionable research for that very reason. "An actionable insight is a business opportunity for the company/PM/UX designer to explore. It means the research has uncovered a behavior from our clients/customers/users that we can leverage to achieve a specific business outcome." I was deeply impressed and "touched" by this paper, the last text of Otto Scharmer and Eva Pomeroy https://lnkd.in/gRb8X7UD I wanted to echo this expanded way of knowing by giving a summary in 5 insights and 3 actionable steps for change-makers: 𝗙𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀: Fourth-Person Knowing: The paper introduces the concept of fourth-person knowing, a type of knowledge that transcends traditional epistemological categories (first-person, second-person, and third-person). This form of knowing emerges from collective awareness and interaction within a social field, facilitating a deeper connection and understanding of the collective whole. Decentering Perception: Fourth-person knowing involves a distinct shift in perception, where individuals experience a decentering of their usual sense of space, time, and self. This shift allows for a more expansive and interconnected awareness, enhancing the capacity to perceive and act from a collective standpoint. Heightened Sense of Possibility: This type of knowing brings about a heightened sense of potential, making previously unattainable goals seem achievable. This expanded sense of possibility can inspire and empower individuals to undertake transformative actions. The best design systems advice has nothing to do with design systems. That's because design systems are easy. The hard part is cultural / process / behavior change management. For that, dive into the work of Geoffrey Moore and Simon Sinek Want to get everyone at your company to use your system? Ignore 90% of them. Don't even make the system available to them. Exclude them entirely. Give everything you can to enable a small, passionate group. Align your roadmap to their needs. Make them wildly successful. Best case? You have raving advocates and a killer case study. Worst case? You learn from small-scale failure and have a chance to iterate. #designsystems #changemanagement #culturalchange #enablementtheory

The Ready
Leadership teams: What are they and what do they *actually* do? Really, that’s the big question for At Work With The Ready this week. Because figuring out how leadership fits into organizational transformation and what great leaders of transformation either do or don’t do is paramount for making change and steering through complexity. Leadership teams can be a force multiplier for the work we’re doing *if* they get their hands on the work of the business. Which, let’s face it, hasn’t been the MO of LTs for a good while now. Thinking and judging and guiding are 100% important skills—but when that flurry of activity is divorced from any doing? That’s how we lower the ceiling on the impact a leadership team can truly have. If LTs don’t model the end state they’re aiming for, if they’re more concerned about triple-checking the meeting invite list than shaking up how they meet and collaborate, then they’ll be stuck playing defense forever. Our hope: That leadership teams of the future play offense—and that means connecting doing and thinking at a higher altitude. It means acting like org designers and focusing on the creation of the organization itself.
