NEWS: UC Berkeley Plans Bakar ClimatEnginuity Hub -- The University of California, Berkeley is planning to construct the Bakar ClimatEnginuity Hub as part of a new downtown innovation zone. Designed by Gensler, the five-story, 145,000-sf facility will provide wet and dry laboratories, collaboration spaces, conference rooms, and offices. The robust structure will also include flexible scale-up suites for the development of renewable energy solutions, carbon-capture technologies, and greener building materials and agricultural practices. Supported by funding from Addison Labs Foundation, the transformative project will collocate academic investigators with up to 75 industry partners, startup companies, and entrepreneurs. Turner Construction Company is the general contractor for the highly sustainable building, with site work slated to commence in summer of 2024. While many human bodies can easily walk, run and jump, these processes are surprisingly complicated for robots. At the UW, a multidisciplinary research team including University of Washington, Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering professor Sam Burden, is figuring out why. Researchers examined the engineering subsystems involved in robotic-legged locomotion and made a surprising discovery – although robotic components were almost always superior to biological ones, as a unified whole, animals were significantly better at these types of movements. “It is not the quality of robotic components that explains this wide performance gap, but rather, how they are put together into a unified whole,” says Burden. If you want a more humanized response from GPT-4, it's better to have a conversational approach. A study at UCSanDiego found it’s 2-times tougher for humans to discriminate between GPT-4 and Human responses during short-term conversations than Eliza and GPT-3.5. During the conversation, GPT-4 outperformed the other two LLMs in linguistic style and socioemotional traits. #chatgpt #gpt4 #gpt3.5 #eliza #llm #turingtest

#TBT 1/26/2022 “UCI researchers discover cause, develop pharmacological treatment for reducing retinitis pigmentosa vision loss” Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, found that the lack of a protein called Adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1) leads to the accumulation of ceramides in the retina, causing the death of photoreceptors and vision loss. They discovered that a combination of two drugs, desipramine and L-cycloserine, can lower ceramide levels, protecting these cells and improving vision in mice. The study concluded that a build-up of ceramides in the retina damages the cells responsible for vision and triggers inflammation. The drugs helped lower ceramide levels, preserving the vision cells in mice and enhancing their ability to see in daylight. What this means for USH: This research is essential for conditions like Usher syndrome, where vision loss happens due to the breakdown of vision cells. According to Crunchbase, in 2023 "more than 50% of all global venture funding for #AI-related startups went to companies headquartered in the Bay Area."  The Bay Area, of course, is also the home of Google, Meta, and other very large tech companies that are investing heavily in AI. It also has two leading AI research universities, UC Berkeley and Stanford. All of this is why the Crunchbase article calls the SF Bay Area "the undisputed epicenter of artificial intelligence."  #generativeAI

If you're a first-year medical student, you can be a leader the same as if you're a fourth year or if you're a last-year resident. It's just a matter of your mentality and how you carry yourself.
