In an effort to address the growing backlog of clean energy projects waiting to be connected to the grid, the Department of Energy (DOE) has released a new roadmap outlining potential solutions. The 35 solutions in the roadmap are organized around increasing data access, transparency, and security for interconnection; improving interconnection process and timeline; promoting economic efficiency in interconnection; and maintaining a reliable, resilient, and secure grid.

Remember when there were hundreds of relays they wanted to put into a box and make it easier, smarter, simpler? The same thing is occurring now with the push for edge computing, IIoT, and Industry 4.0. The difference is that manufacturers have hundreds of data silos, and the drive is to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning, instead of computers. This push will change the PLC and the way that we look at PLC-oriented control systems. Eventually, the PLC will become a smaller entity as instrumentation is controlled by computers remotely. Unified namespace applied technology fits with systems-oriented ideas and being able to repeat subsystems in the system and to document additions of hardware in the system as they are added. This is the drive behind the Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), which is working to tie data silos together in manufacturing and progress Industry 4.0 initiatives to enhance the digital transformation. This way of thinking has been dubbed “smart factory.”

A question for the community... Why do you think, in 2024, it is so difficult to walk into a manufacturing facility and observe actual interoperability -- both horizontally (across a layer of the stack like PLC/HMI) and vertically (up and down the stack, like SCADA to MES)? I'll reserve my comments for the comment section -- but I want to know what your thoughts and experiences are. Seven states have adopted the IEEE 1547-2018 Standard for distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection, according to data compiled by the the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC). An “Adoption Tracker,” presented in map form offers insight into which states, utilities, and ISO/RTOs have adopted IEEE 1547-2018 that establishes how DERs like solar and energy storage can connect to the grid.

Several different job types in Industrial Controls systems: It came to my attention when talking about System Integration companies, that folks might think that is all there are for people working in ICS. Short Answer: not true, but I expect you knew that from the title. 1) Systems Integration - Jobs are varied, travel can be kinda high, salaries can be a bit higher, but the amount of work is volatile. 2) Plant Engineering - I'm not gonna say this is "boring", but it tends to be less about engineering new solutions, more about maintaining the solutions and iteratively improving them. Plus side: not as much traveling out of state; downside: being on call to keep the plant running can be a bit much; losing "holidays" because that is when the plant isn't running, so its upgrade time! 3) Machine builder - Products - These roles are focused on building a product line. Maybe its tray formers, maybe its carton sealers, maybe its palletizers. You are building machines that are often nearly exactly the same. Good news, you are less likely to be doing field work, or perhaps you are only doing the field install work. Advantage of these roles is you become an expert in the machines, and the processes fairly quickly (under 4 years). 4) Machine builder - Custom - These are where you work with a customer to build a completely custom machine. A bit more challenge here, and but also more travel is likely, and the market volatility can be kinda high again compared with Product Line machine builders. These aren't hard & fast business models, just different types of services for ICS folks to be in. I was plant support while working as an SI on numerous occasions. There are many different blends out there. More food for thought.

Hello LinkedIN community. Ran into some fun recently with Rockwell Tech Support not willing to support a CompactLogix fault we were getting because the Firmware was out of date. We have a 1-week shutdown coming up for this particular line, so I figure I'll go through all 11 PLC's and update them to get them back into support for the client. The ControlFlash tools look pretty automated and well done. I reserve the right to change my mind on this statement. I'm also going to explore doing all the ancillary devices like Enet cards, drives, etc. if I have time. I figure I can use it to develop a procedure for the plant folks to keep these things up to date. Any suggestions or lessons learned to share with us before we start this process? I'd prefer to learn from others that might have turned their PLC into a brick versus learning the lesson myself. #Firmware #Rockwell #ControlLogix #Automation
