For all of my recruiting friends out there, I have set up a FB community just for recruiters that is going to be focused on setting a higher standard for our industry by focusing on an elite recruiter mindset and peak performance. It's going to be a bit different because we are going to require our members to come to the table with solutions to everyday recruiting problems and educate/help new recruiters learn how to serve their clients and candidates a consultant level NOT just be a resume slinger. Too many of the current groups are focused on the next shiny object, and people whining about how bad things are because they were never taught the right way to recruit. And quite frankly, they are looking for the EASY button. This is my way of giving back to the recruiting community in hopes of elevating the recruiting industry's persona. Because let's face it, most people think we are no better than used car salesmen. It's time to set a higher standard and elevate our game so we can serve people at a much higher level and start being considered consultants, NOT resume slingers. You’ll get better service if you only work with one recruiting agency. Assuming you’ve found the right agency, you will get much better results if your agency partners aren’t competing against each other. Seems counterintuitive, but if you have multiple agencies working on one role, they will be more inclined to send everyone they talk to (even if they aren’t as relevant). The last thing we want is for another agency to take a risk we didn’t take that then pays off. So you’ll get A LOT more candidates that miss the mark. If you just commit to one strong agency partner and work with them so they know your needs intimately, they will have the confidence to send only the people they feel most strongly about. They’ll also feel like they can take the time to find the perfect person. Aka you get better quality candidates. If you haven’t found the right partner yet, it’s worth focusing on that as a goal.

103 applicants and only two qualify. Here is some advice when applying for jobs, especially in Aerospace & Defense. Companies do not count your internship as real world work experience. It does give you a leg up when we are hiring new grads but for the most part, not work experience. School work and projects related or not, is also not work experience. Again, it does set you apart if it is relevant but not work experience. Car manufacturing experience is not the same as aerospace manufacturing experience. Companies hiring for experienced aerospace/aircraft or airframe engineers would rarely consider auto industry experience as relevant. Lastly, for Aerospace/Defense roles in most cases you must be a US Citizen. Why are Staffing agency markups dropping in California?? The California Staffing Market continues to lose margin as many temp staffing agencies have a created a price war. Some markups are as low as 19%! Recently a very good staffing supplier of ours Eric Garcia who runs a wonderful staffing business in California was victim to this when a fraudulent staffing supplier outbid him at 19%. This really hurts Eric’s business and put his client in jeopardy. But how is this possible?? How can an agency price services below the cost of doing business? Let me give you some ways it is happening: 1. Misclassification of workers comp codes 2. Not paying payroll taxes These are two of the most common reasons on how an agency can price below cost. Do YOU, the client, have any exposure??? YOU BETTER BELIEVE YOU DO!! Misclassification of workers comp in which YOU THE CLIENT benefit from can get you in BIG trouble. How can you (the staffing agency) better educate your clients on the risks of doing business with these kind of companies? Forward this post to your client or remind them of the risks they are taking when working with these fraudulent companies. I will share another post that can provide companies a check list on how to avoid these issues.

After four years in generalist recruitment across industries like technology, finance, pharmaceuticals, oil & gas, FMCG, and tobacco, I've found a niche worth specializing in. Since April 1st, coincidentally the day of cannabis legalization in Germany, I’ve been exclusively recruiting in the Cannabis industry. Despite the short time, I've noticed some remarkable differences compared to other sectors: 1: Knowledge Sharing: Everyone is eager to share their expertise, from entry-level cultivators to marketing professionals and start-up founders advocating for the plant’s medical benefits. The passion and willingness to share stories are truly inspiring. 2: Community Connections: Working with Lumino has given me a unique advantage. I often hear, "I spoke to Aj in 2022, say hi from me," or "I’ve worked with Thomas and Nikita before." This tight-knit community supports one another actively, and the camaraderie is refreshing. 3: Continuous Learning: Even the most established Cannabis companies in Europe are less than a decade old. While we have many knowledgeable professionals, no one has all the answers. The best part? Everyone is open to learning and sharing tips, fostering a collaborative environment. Do recruiters need experience recruiting in the fields that they recruit for? No but some of the best ones that I've ever worked with have. I fell into sales recruiting without any true GTM related experience but I sold credit cards at LaGuardia Airport while in school. Pushing travelers to sign up for credit cards before flights is nothing like a $1 million enterprise software deal. An idiot comparison, but some things were similar. One, I became a sales book obsessive, Jeffrey Gitomer's Little Red Book of Selling came with me everywhere (probably outdated now but still) Two, I had to make people trust me fast so they'd hand over personal info like social security numbers. Three, ethics first - people before anything. Sure, you got paid per app, but screwing someone's credit for a shitty Delta tee and free flight wasn't worth it. Can I handle a huge SaaS deal? Hell no. But do I know enough about sales and these cycles generally work? Absolutely - more than enough to vet candidates, talk to sales leaders in a meaningful way. The underlying sales principles transfer over, even if the products and complexities are worlds apart.

Flashback to Sept 2023 in Hawaii. I'm walking on stage to accept a Founders Club award at Jobot for billing $1,032,000 in 2022. Sadly, last week was my last week at Jobot. Let me start by saying I'll always be grateful for the EPIC experience I had there. It was an amazing ride with a ton of incredible people. No hard feelings at all. So what happened? Well, my billing numbers fell off a cliff. 2018: $168,000 2019: $480,400 2020: $373,200 2021: $374,200 2022: $1,032,000 2023: $426,100 So far in 2024 I've only billed $28k 📉 Why? Here are all the possible reasons I can think of... - Down tech market? - Layoffs? - Burn out? - Resentment over changes in company policy? - Lost motivation? - Spent too much time posting content? - Regime changes at big customers? - Ineffective email sequences/campaigns? - Not enough cold calls? - Too stubborn to pivot industries? - Req snobbery? - Senioritis? - Negative mindset? - Poisoned by doom scrolling? - Fear of a pending AI takeover? - Self sabotage? I think it was a mix of all the above. TMI? Maybe, but I don't think I'm the only one suffering from these ailments. Thousands of recruiters are experiencing these. Strangely enough, I saw this day coming a year ago. I felt it. I kinda knew it was coming. But is that why it happened? Not sure, but I'm at peace with it and looking forward to a new chapter. A fresh start. A new challenge. So what's next? I'm exploring a number of options. For now, the Imperial Security Bureau Podcast will live on. Recruiting fees aren't worth it... What about the additional fees you pay for Doordash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, Redbox, etc. Why do we do pay additional fees when we can just pick up our own food or return items on time? Well, you don’t want to break away from that show, drive in this heat (we're getting baked in Phoenix), or have to throw on some pants that you took off after that Zoom meeting.. In all actuality, you’re paying for your time, which is convenient. More time is more convenience to do the things that are a priority. Managers have priorities, limiting their time. Trying to hire a hard-to-find skillset or an entire team while getting their own projects done is time-consuming. If you’re hiring and don’t have the people in place to find talent, you could take the time to do: 🕛 Market research of candidate cost of living/salary, remote vs in-office availability based on skillset, and hiring/retention best practices. 🕑 Source candidates through paid for tools, years of networking, and skill-based targeted searches. 🕒  Qualify and interview dozens to hundreds of applicants to ascertain initial alignment and interest. 🕔 Coordinate all interviews and feedback process providing candidate prep, invites, and post-interview debrief/follow-up. 🕕 Stay in regular communication with the candidates to gauge their continued interest, competitive opportunities, schedule, and more – no surprises! 🕘  Research post-hire on salary trends/benefit changes in comparison to similar roles and company sizes in the market to build retention. The service doesn’t stop after the deal is done. Or you could pay a fee to take all of this off your plate. Everything you buy is for convenience. Time is money.

Recruiters - take heart. The wave of recruiting hires is coming. Companies have been hiring sales talent from Q4 through Q1 2024. Those Account Executives and beginning to see traction - new clients, job orders and placements. Companies will have to invest in delivery talent to fill demand. I've been in agency recruiting for 6 years now and I still don't think my friends and family know what I do...They still think I'm in accounting lol. Here is the simplest way I can explain what agency recruiting is and why you need to have an agency recruiter in your corner 👇👇 I help companies (clients) fill open roles that they may be struggling to fill with the best possible talent in the quickest amount of time. "But Alec, don't companies have internal recruiters? Why would they pay a 30K fee for one person?" Great question! Big companies have internal talent acquisition teams that work on filling open positions. They may have anywhere from 10-50 open positions at once in multiple departments. This can be a lot to juggle on top of having a market where candidates are scarce. An agency recruiter will typically focus on one specific function to fill (accounting and finance in my case). Because of this, we have pre-existing databases and talent maps of all the candidates that could potentially fill the open role in 2-3 weeks' time (including the candidate's notice period). This saves the hiring manager a headache and wasted time on interviews. Saves their team from taking on extra work from the open role. Saves their HR team budget & and resources trying to fill it on their own. Bigger companies with established brands have an advantage over small to mid-size. They can bring on a team of 10 internal talent acquisition people to fill their roles with the volume of applications and the ability of their team to reach out with the power of branding behind them. Good people want to work for good companies and good companies often offer the best comp, opportunity, and notoriety. That's why my particular focus is on growing privately held companies or middle-market publicly traded companies that are growing and need help. These companies might not have a 10-person talent acquisition team. It might be a couple of people in HR who are handling not only recruiting but HR compliance as well. The key for the accounting and finance world is that the company is growing and financial complexity is growing with it requiring more advanced reporting and analysis. You can't just hire to fill an open position, it has to be the right person or company growth is going to be limited. That's where the hunting/attracting adds value for my clients because this type of talent just isn't going to apply to a role that's posted online. TL: DR- Agency recruiters help fill specific positions for companies (clients) with the best person in the fastest amount of time possible. #agencyrecruiter #hiring #talentacquisition

Question: How much do contract staffing agencies make per employee? Answer: For an employee with a $50/hour pay rate (the hourly rate paid to the employee), the average bill rate would be $75/hour (the hourly rate paid by the client to the agency. The "burden" of this employee is about $9/hour: that is the cost of payroll services, employee taxes, unemployment claims management, compliance, workers compensation, and other insurance. If you require funding, which you can get from an employer of record, that usually costs an extra 2%. In this case, $1/hour. They will provide invoicing and collections in that cost. Your total hourly cost of the employee is $60. You will make $15/hour per employee. That's $75 minus $60 = $15. An annual salary is estimated by multiplying the pay rate by 2,000. So, for every $50/hour employee on assignment, you make $2,500 per month or $30K per year. How many contractors would you need on assignment to pay all of your bills, including your owner's salary and disbursements? Everything on top can be re-invested into growing your business and if you do perm placements, those are icing on the cake.
