United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has successfully collaborated with the Governance Lab (GovLab) to design and deliver an immersive, two-week long, project-based and team-focused learning experience for middle- and high-school students in the Washington, DC area. The program’s goal is to help students build familiarity and hands-on competence with the approaches, tools, and analytical techniques relevant to harnessing the power of open data on critical issues related to food and agriculture.
Clearly recognizing that agricultural work in the future will increasingly depend on data mastery, USDA has consistently been a strong voice of support for encouraging such students, through experience-driven learning opportunities, to develop an interest, as well as confidence, in working with data. Our guiding principle has been simple: if such interest and excitement and confidence can be kindled, the odds go up that these students will make course and even career choices touching on data and agriculture.
