Did you know that RTX has its own internal Technical Networks!? These are legacy entities from the old Raytheon days where the Technical Networks were tasked with ensuring that professional engineers of like disciplines were able to communicate and share best practices across the company (which can be a considerable challenge in large companies). This year is the Mechanical, Materials, and Structures Technical Network (MMSTN) internal week long symposium. Last symposium there were over 600 professionals from within RTX gathered together (digitally since it was 2 years ago) to exchange knowledge and network. This year we hope to include even more of our engineering colleagues from Pratt & Whitney and Collins Aerospace as we locate in E. Hartford for this years MMSTN Symposium. This particular symposium as it is one of the first in person events that RTX will host on this scale since the pandemic ended. The symposium consists of a week long activities and presentations that encourage engineers to get together across business units and geographies and share a cup of coffee in rooting out their most pressing issues. This particular event is limited to RTX personnel only. However, we have a vendor showcase event that allows for vendors to come into the symposium and make a similar presentation on their technological capabilities and how those would be of benefit to RTX. These presentations are followed by a vendor showcase event where the attendees of the MMSTN symposium come in and ask questions and understand each vendors capabilities. If you are a vendor and want to participate let me know and I can get you some information on how to take part. RTX people be on the lookout for the announcement in your work inbox! If you don't get it by next week ask your closest work friend or manager. If that doesn't work ask me! Don't miss out on this awesome opportunity to submit an abstract and take part in the gathering.

This contract has the potential to rise to $103 million and will fund the development of ground infrastructure. The contract, awarded by the Space Systems Command’s Commercial Space Office (COMSO) within the U.S. Space Force, is for ground infrastructure services in support of the Enhanced Mobile Satellite Services (EMSS) program. How would today's Autonomous Flight Termination systems (AFTS) from SpaceX, Blue Origin, ULA, etc. handle a scenario like this? With manned missions we draw the Instantaneous Impacts Points/Lines a bit wider to allow enough time for crew notification, if possible, but the Launch Abort Systems will protect the crew as exemplified in that New Shepard capsule separation a couple of years back. Now from a Public Safety perspective keeping the knowledge and accuracy requirement for the first 2000 ft of flight as tight as it currently is ensures minimum potential damage from a wildly veered off course rocket for whatever reason and enough stoppage distance for the safety ordnance to null as much as possible (powered flight vs physics such as momentum and gravity assisted) the forward motion of the rocket, thus ensuring no harm comes to those on the ground either in a Launch Control Center (LCC) or adjacent viewing areas to these rocket launches that always amaze our kids and us.

We report the first hybrid matter-photon implementation of verifiable blind quantum computing. We use a trapped-ion quantum server and a client-side photonic detection system networked via a fiber-optic quantum link. The availability of memory qubits and deterministic entangling gates enables interactive protocols without postselection—key requirements for any scalable blind server, which previous realizations could not provide. We quantify the privacy at ≲ 0.03 leaked classical bits per qubit. This experiment demonstrates a path to fully verified quantum computing in the cloud.

What is similar between a spacecraft and a human? They both have systems they can't live (function) without. 😅 Just like the human body needs a circulatory system, a nervous system, a digestive system, and many more, so too does a spacecraft need systems to allow it to perform its intended functions and operations. These basic spacecraft systems are found in 99% of all spacecraft, so it's crucial for scientists and engineers alike to understand them. The key systems that make up a spacecraft are: 1. Command & Data Handling (C&DH) 🧠 2. Attitude Control System (ACS) ↖ 3. Electrical Power System (EPS) 🛰 4. Temperature Control System (TCS) 🌡 5. Propulsion System 🚀 6. Communications System 📡 7. Another very cool podcast on Inversion, this time on The Orbital Mechanics podcast. I have been listening to The Orbital Mechanics since college, so it is pretty so fun to hear the work I am doing being discussed on the show! There’s also a great elevator pitch for Inversion that should help answer the questions people often ask, including: “What does Inversion do?” “Who is the customer base?” “How is that possible?” Minute 21:53 is where Inversion comes on. Some of my personal favorite moments are: 38:00, when the Recovery Team is discussed. 43:40, when Justin talks about recovery operations. 48:10 when Justin recounts a drop test that didn’t exactly go as planned… Enjoy!

NASA has just posted their Space Debris Cost-Benefit Analysis. Looks like just tracking large debris and potentially altering their orbits with lasers is a lot more effective than any of these rescue missions. Mitigation is the standout category, where proper timely disposal and 3mm of shielding are the best solutions. Which poses the question, do we just need to live with existing Space Debris for now and deal with it down the line once we've developed a more effective removal system?

One particular aspect of the #NextGenSpacesuit we have honed in on is the ability to upgrade as new technology becomes available. If your product is not able to adapt to changes, limitations will ultimately occur resulting from part and technology obsolescence. We have seen in both space and national defense programs, life extensions become far more challenging after parts are no longer available, suppliers go out of business, or backwards compatibility is lost resulting from technology evolution. https://lnkd.in/eZqVrXjJ Ok, so DUI is looking at (and funding) sea based space launching of rockets to give more flexibility and options for launching. I like the idea but how do the rockets get there? Is it a “load on” at port idea and then emplace for launch or will there be a ferry of sorts? I wonder what the sea state limitations would be on rocket delivery. I have some port infrastructure ideas that could make this a reality but this concept begs a lot of logistics questions… Honestly, I am more interested in the other end of this, the recovery/reception of logistics packages on the other side of the globe. Let’s go Army Watercraft! You need to get into the future fight and provide better options for Commanders.

One of the amendments directs the FAA to establish a pathway for BVLOS operations and create two additional test sites for companies to start using unmanned aircraft (UAS) for package delivery or other operations. Another is for developing UAS (UAV/Drone) standards, engaging communities and informing policies to facilitate their safe deployment and operations. Watch closely! "The U.S. Senate has voted 84-13 to invoke cloture on the FAA Reauthorization Cantwell-Cruz substitute amendment, as modified to H.R. 3935 – the House version of the FAA Reauthorization Bill. Cloture is a motion to limit debate and move forward towards a vote." "According to a press release posted on the Senate Committee of Commerce, Science and Transportation website, the Cantwell-Cruz substitute amendment includes the following for the UAS/Drone/AAM industry: *Modernizing the National Airspace System and Leading Global Aviation Innovation *Modernizes FAA Systems: The bill requires the FAA to complete the last stage of NextGen by December 31, 2025, and upgrade the National Airspace System with the latest software and infrastructure. *Plans for Future Airspace Technology: The bill provides the FAA with resources and direction to complete the next stage of airspace modernization by deploying new air traffic management and surveillance technologies and incorporating the lessons learned from previous modernization efforts. *Facilitates Commercial Use of Drones and Unmanned Aircraft: The bill directs the FAA to establish a pathway for beyond visual line-of-sight operations and create two additional test sites for companies to start using unmanned aircraft (UAS) for package delivery or other operations. The bill also gives the FAA enforcement authority to prohibit unauthorized or unsafe use of UAS. *Extends the BEYOND program: The bill continues the BEYOND program, launched in 2020, for five years. Progress has been made under the Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program which centers around developing standards, engaging communities and informing policies to facilitate the safe deployment and operation of drones. *Supports Avenues to Safety Certification of Air Taxis: The bill supports pathways and additional certainty needed for the safety certification of advanced air mobility powered-lift aircraft, or “air taxis,” capable of vertical take-off and landing. #uas #drone #aam #faa https://lnkd.in/eFm3qNGQ

The Manufacturing Technology Deployment Group (“MTDG”), which is the parent organization of the National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM), who run the America Makes program, is interested in better understanding the adoption, progression, and deployment of Polymer Additive Manufacturing (“PAM”) for industrial and commercial production. Although polymer AM processes are becoming mature and have provided new insight and opportunities in various fields, key limitations still need to be overcome. Due in part to these limitations many organizations have not adopted and/or expanded the role of polymer additive manufacturing. MTDG is sponsoring a collaborative, in-depth Delphi investigation with persons knowledgeable about polymer additive manufacturing to examine what barriers are limiting the adoption and progression of PAM as well as what steps need to be taken to accelerate its acceptance and usage in a broadening array of industries providing end-use industrial and commercial product applications. This Delphi investigation is being undertaken for the benefit of the community at large and the results will be openly available to all participants. To accomplish this collaborative research effort with complete anonymity for the participants, MTDG has contracted with an expert in conducting in-depth Delphi investigations - Chuck Ptacek, an industrial psychologist with 30+ years of experience. To this end, if you are willing to be interviewed, Chuck would like to talk to you regarding your views concerning the adoption and progression of polymer additive manufacturing and will contact you to establish an appropriate time to interview you once he hears from you.
