Are you a Dualie? If you are, then you could be key to strengthening long-term participation in the game. In short, the National Golf Foundation define a dualie is a golfer who plays both on-course and off-course golf. Not content with a regular 18, they use a simulator, visit the range, or head down to a Top Golf or a Big Shots in between rounds. I’ve seen several reports recently about the consistent growth of off-course golf. And I’ve heard a fair bit of concern from the industry on whether it will weaken participation in the traditional game. I’ve always thought otherwise – so it’s great to see this report suggesting I was right 😊 When we see golfers taking lessons, or hitting the range we know that the number of rounds they play goes up – we’ve measured it. We know that when we can help engage golfers in activities around the club other than playing golf, the number of rounds they play goes up – we’ve measured it. So it has always followed in my head that when golfers hit balls for leisure, the number of rounds they play will go up. In addition, this report shows that they are more committed to traditional golf, their ability level is higher, they spend more money on equipment, and - the number of rounds they play goes up! I think there’s also a great argument that off course golf is a fantastic entry point for many people too. HockeyCares.org: Championing Safety and Awareness in the Face of Sport-Related Brain Injuries Friends and colleagues know about my longstanding efforts with the sport of ice hockey, first as a fan in the early 1970s and then as one of the first two of three founding employees of the Philadelphia Flyers fan development-focused organization, Hockey Central, starting in 1976. From those earliest days, I will always recall how a head injury caused in a high school hockey game ended the career of a promising player from the Inter-County Scholastic Hockey League, Kurt Pollard. And for that reason and more, now almost 50 years later, is why I’m part of Hockey Cares. The recent University of Stirling study has underscored the severe long-term impacts of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in sports, revealing that nearly half of affected athletes suffer enduring symptoms. This data has only strengthened our resolve at HockeyCares.org. As its Vice President and a board of director member, I am proud to say that we are not just reacting to these findings, but we are amplifying our ongoing initiatives to align closely with them. We are committed to making a difference. HockeyCares.org doesn’t want members of the hockey community to suffer from the sport they love. We would prefer to see increased safety and comprehensive post-injury protocols in hockey, a sport where physicality and high speeds often cause TBIs.  When they do, we step in to help. My commitment to this cause is not just professional but deeply personal. It stems from a history of proactive safety advocacy, which I was a part of during my days in the 1980s when I served on both the Safety and Protective Equipment Committee for USA Hockey and the Hockey Equipment Certification Council. The University of Stirling study provides a scientific basis that supports the need for better protective gear, more rigorous safety standards, and enhanced education about the risks and repercussions of TBIs. It emphasizes the necessity of our efforts to not only equip players with the means to protect themselves but also to educate them, their families, and coaches about the serious, sometimes subtle, symptoms of TBIs and the importance of proper recovery time. As an organization, HockeyCares.org is not just about making a difference but making a tangible and positive difference. We are uniquely positioned to lead by example, fostering a culture shift towards taking TBIs seriously. By supporting affected families and advocating for changes at the grassroots and professional levels, we can significantly impact the lives of athletes. In light of these findings, the role of Hockey Cares has never been more critical. We are reminded of the importance of our mission as we strive to ensure that hockey remains a sport celebrated not only for its intensity and competitiveness but also for its commitment to the health and safety of its players. When it comes to "Push vs Pull" in the golf swing, golfers make the mistake in 2 key areas of their swing. One is when they start their backswing and the other is in the transition from backswing to downswing. This typically produces an outside in downswing path and the result is mostly slicing and pulling the ball offline. What the golfer should be doing is understanding how to Push in the start of the backswing and the downswing and this will lead to an on path swing allowing the clubhead to hit the ball straight. So next time you are hitting slice or pull shots you can guarantee that you are not pushing correctly and are using a pulling technique. When you are in the business of writing articles, they don’t always get published right away. Case in point: the article I submitted to the Golf Fitness Association of America (GFAA) on May 24th didn’t publish until June 25th. Enough time passed that I actually forgot I submitted it, which made for a nice surprise today when I opened my inbox and found it had gone live. Our human experience comes with the dimension of time, bringing aging and all the things many of us associate with it—hair loss, greying, new wrinkles, strange skin spots, and more. In golf, over time, statistically we lose power and distance. But does it have to be like that? I’m not sure it does. I’ve heard tales of tribes that lived healthy lives for roughly 200 years until they were discovered by others and learned they weren’t “supposed” to live that long. Within a generation or more, lifespans decreased to what we consider normal. We also live in a multidimensional electromagnetic field. In the dimensional space of oneness, geometrically there is no A and B of time, only A—the now. This space is one of abundance and perfect health. We can access it, in part because we’re already in and of it. Without getting any further into the metaphysical, the point is, similar to what Morpheus said to Neo in “The Matrix,” some rules can be bent, others broken. We can challenge conventional thinking to experience something different and even better. That’s partly what this article, "Defying Age: How to Maintain and Increase Distance As You Get Older”, is about. Of the last 600 DVS Scores added to the DVS Baseball Injury Risk Model, 1.3% of pitchers have an optimal foot strike component score. Why is this relevant? Each deduction in the foot strike component score significantly amplifies a pitcher's likelihood of sustaining a major arm injury by 20.59%. Why only 1.3% of pitchers? Recent biomechanical data from DVS Scores show an ongoing disconnect between the trunk/spine and the throwing forearm moving into a weight-bearing foot strike. The disconnect commonly occurs after a pitcher initiates their delivery sequence toward the plate and the hands have separated from the glove.  Ideally, as the throwing hand reaches the bottom, the trunk/spine, elbow, and wrists will move back toward the center at a similar progression ( you can see this demonstrated in the attached video). Modern pitchers often maintain periods of flexion or remain static in the trunk and spine as they manipulate the throwing elbow and wrist under increased tension. This disconnection results in a timing misalignment between the onset of pelvic rotation and the positioning of the trunk/spine and throwing arm at this critical phase, the gateway. Increasing the 1.3% In a culture riddled with arm injuries, increased average velocity in pitchers is often to blame for its ability to increase torque on the throwing arm. But we want torque and want to preserve the velocity. We have to transfer the torque distribution differently by utilizing a greater impulse of the throwing arm on each pitch. The increased utilization of mass and leverage facilitates a greater impulse of the throwing arm, allowing it to produce force over a longer duration. Pitchers who consistently record low component scores at foot strike are often compelled to depend more heavily on the strength and speed of their throwing arm to sustain performance from one pitch to the next. When generating force from a suboptimal position at foot strike, there is an increase in the torque applied to the throwing arm. This pattern is evident in the data collected from a large population of MLB pitchers. The video highlights a progression I created as part of our Mechanics for Velocity and Performance program, which will be infused in our upcoming "The Physics of the Optimal Pitch." Using a tennis racket, a pitcher can feel the incorporation of the trunk and the throwing arm moving to the center. Upon acceleration, the racket helps drive greater thoracic extension, thus allowing upper mass to transfer over the center of mass into release.
