I am proud to announce the release of our 2023-2024 impact report, which highlights the results of our work to build a better government and a stronger democracy. The report explores the difference we made for public servants, their agencies, and our good government allies over the past year and our future plans to help the federal government keep pace with the world. The health of our democracy depends on the ability of our government to connect with and deliver for the people it serves, regardless of partisan battles and election outcomes. At a time when our democracy faces several challenges, including low trust in public institutions, political polarization, and increasingly virulent attacks on the nonpartisan civil service, our accomplishments, and plans for the future are critical. Read the full report to learn more about our work. https://lnkd.in/dPCZcTw6

I'm excited to share the release of Partnership for Public Service's 2024 State of Trust report! This research investigates public trust in our federal government and perceptions of non-elected public servants. Despite an overall decline in public trust—only 23% of Americans trust government, down from 35% in 2022—there's a remarkable consensus across the political spectrum in favor of a nonpartisan, merit-based civil service. This consensus underscores the necessity for improved communication about the crucial work of public servants and the significance of an expert, apolitical civil service in a well-functioning democracy. Key insights from the report: - Stronger support for non-elected civil servants than for the federal government overall. - Majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents oppose further politicization of civil service and support an apolitical workforce. - 91% of Americans believe competent civil servants are essential for a strong democracy. - 95% agree that civil servants should be hired and promoted based on merit, not political beliefs. Why does this matter? Amid proposals to replace large swaths of our non-elected workforce with political appointees, it's crucial to understand public perceptions of civil servants. Our research highlights the importance of a nonpartisan, merit-based civil service to ensure that our government is trusted and effective. Replacing experts with political appointees will only reinforce the notion that the government is incompetent and unable to deliver on its promises. Creating a better government that delivers for the American public is a collective responsibility. I invite you to read the full report and explore our Trust Dashboard for key data points, resources, and strategies to elevate public understanding of civil servants and foster a more effective government. Read the report and visit our Trust Dashboard for more insights here: https://lnkd.in/gZ4GY847 #TrustInGovernment #StateOfTrust2024 #CivilService

"U.S. State Department to send diplomatic advisers to American cities." This new effort is a valid attempt by the US to prevent countries from circumventing national policies thru the establishment of partnership with States. It is crucial that Federal, State and Tribal government speak with one accord when dealing with foreign entities. Failure of US multi-governments to put forth a unified effort could lead to inconsistent prices on merchandise and purchase of property that has National Security concerns. https://lnkd.in/eQEU2yVQ

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has taken significant steps to reinstate net neutrality, closing loopholes and restoring strong federal protections against all forms of throttling. The FCC's final adopted order on net neutrality reinstates bright line rules, addressing the flaws in the proposed net neutrality rules and recognizing the importance of strong net neutrality protections for all Americans. The FCC's actions are seen as crucial in preventing internet service providers (ISPs) from subverting net neutrality principles and capitalising on technologies that could compromise open internet access. https://lnkd.in/dbc-hqRF

Transitioning from MPIN to OTP in SAM.GOV Registrations: A Significant Update "In a noteworthy development impacting federal contractors and entities engaging with the U.S. government, effective March 31st, 2023, the longstanding Marketing Partner Identification Number (MPIN) has been phased out in SAM.GOV registrations. This transformation represents a pivotal shift in authentication protocols, with the One-Time Passcode (OTP) assuming a central role." Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board to advise the secretary on critical infrastructure risks. While a worthwhile initiative, the design of our current critical infrastrucure policy structure is a fundamental disservice to such efforts. Today, critical infrastrucure encompasses 16 industrial sectors, an unwieldy 60% or more of the U.S. economy, and a grab bag of non-critical assets including casinos, ride share vehicles and the cosmetics industry. For a small committee of 22, this unwieldy scope will strain priorities, waste time, and distract focus from the core systems that really matter. Effectively securing our critical infrastrucure demand we set the priorities, shrink policy scope, and finally determine what is indeed the most critical and the most deserving of DHS’s limited resources. https://lnkd.in/eXdRveWB

Partnership for Public Service
🚨 Just released: The 2024 State of Trust report! 🚨 Our latest report dives into public trust in the federal government and perceptions of non-elected public servants. While overall trust continues to decline—only 23% of Americans trust the federal government, down from 35% in 2022. There's a silver lining —support for a nonpartisan, merit-based civil service remains strong across the political spectrum. Key insights include: - Stronger support for the non-elected civil service than for the federal government overall. - Majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents oppose politicizing the civil service and strongly support an apolitical workforce. - 91% of Americans believe competent civil servants are crucial for a strong democracy. - 95% agree that civil servants should be hired and promoted based on merit, not political beliefs. This research emphasizes the importance of a nonpartisan, merit-based civil service to our democracy. While government needs to improve, replacing experts with political appointees is not the answer and could undermine government competency. To gain public trust, we must create a better government that delivers for the American public. You might not know that LSWI has an ARC WA program to prepare companies for working with government contracts, learn about SBIRs, etc. Ask Kate Hoy And Richard Giersch for other services that the Washington APEX Accelerator and ARC WA offer. They hold regular open office hours for any Life Science questions. While not specific to Life Sciences you can join July 11 Thurston County Government’s lead APEX Accelerator advisor Grady Smith to explore the fundamentals of market research for government contractors. Learn the different platforms and tools available to successfully answer the question, “Who in the government buys what I sell?”. Participants will walk away with a completed Market Research Worksheet for your current (or future) business and gain knowledge in procurement data research and APEX Accelerators. https://lnkd.in/gJaHuESY

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was pleased to see the Office of the National Cyber Director, The White House recognize several recommendations highlighted in the cyber regulatory harmonization RFI summary, including: ✔ Alignment around the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework or sector-specific profiles like the Financial Services Profile as a reference point for organizations seeking to harmonize their cybersecurity practices domestically and internationally. ✔ Reciprocity—The U.S. government should lead international engagement on regulatory harmonization through regulator-to-regulator Memoranda of Understanding or Bilateral Cybersecurity Mutual Recognition or Reciprocity Agreements. ✔ Legislation—Congress should consider legislation to sufficiently empower the White House to convene independent regulatory agencies. The benefits of cyber regulatory cohesion are clear, including facilitation of cross-border trade, improved market access, assurance of stable and predictable regulatory environments, cost reduction, efficient compliance, enhanced cybersecurity, global interoperability, international cooperation, and improved consumer trust. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with Members of Congress and the Administration to advance cyber regulatory harmonization nationally and internationally. https://lnkd.in/eZT52axP

EXTRA EXTRA Social Security Modernizes!!! - See CCSE news blog: www.inequalityink.org: "Social Security says it’s improving a practice called unfair by critics" – CBS The Social Security Administration said it’s dropping 114 occupations from the database, which includes more than 12,000 types of jobs. SSA adjudicators can no longer use a “not disabled” decision in an applicant’s case by citing any of these jobs as an example of work they could perform, the agency said. Some of the jobs that are getting dropped: Canary breeder Character impersonator Directory assistance operator Historian of the dramatic arts Motion-picture projectionist News wire-photo operator Radiotelegraph operator Reptile farmer Watch repairer #SocialSecurity #SSI #SSDI #disability #jobcategories #occupationalcategories #moderization #Socialinsurance

Today, my team published our top 5 open recommendations to GSA for improving federal real property management. Acting on these recommendations is especially important at a time when the federal government is spending billions on real property while many of its office buildings continue to be significantly underused. A big thanks to my team for their work highlighting these important issues. https://lnkd.in/e_mfHkCE

Friends of Acadia is soliciting proposals from consultants or firms to collaborate with FOA staff and board members in crafting a public policy and advocacy strategic plan that will steer our efforts for the next three years. The strategic plan should encompass priorities already endorsed by the FOA Board including the following: -identifying and prioritizing climate-related advocacy actions, -outlining engagement with federal authorities to increase appropriations and promote policies and procedures which benefit the National Park Service and ANP, -establishing guidelines around new engagements and partnerships with local, state, and federal authorities as well as with civil society organizations, and -providing guidance in dealing with threats to ANP (such as oversized cell towers, large aquaculture operations near park land, harmful legislation, and economic development projects that might negatively impact the visitor experience). View the request for proposals at: https://lnkd.in/eg4WF2aD. Submissions due May 13, 2024. Reach out for additional details!

Our upcoming CECC hearing will look at how complicit corporations are using social audits to whitewash supply chains containing goods produced with forced labor in China, including the Uyghur Autonomous Region. Time to hold corporations to their own (hypocritical) Environmental Social and Governance/ESG standards, and time for our Securities and Exchange Commission to hold publicly-traded corporations accountable for any material misstatements and omissions in their annual reports. (Hint to plaintiffs’ bar: there is a role for policing corporations whose shareholders lose value due to 10b-5 violations or reputational harm due to tainted supply chains.)

🚨 TOMORROW: Important Webinar Alert 🚨 Congressional offices are still experiencing an alarming number of menacing or threatening calls. The US Capitol Police have noted a significant increase in such incidents in recent years, with interns and staff assistants often bearing the brunt of these verbal attacks. To address this issue, the Congressional Management Foundation (CMF) and American Psychological Association (APA) are pleased to host a crucial webinar to provide guidance and strategies for junior staff on Capitol Hill. This session will offer practical advice for managing distressed constituents and insights into how staffers can recover from these stressful interactions. CMF and APA urge senior staff to encourage those who interact with constituents to attend this program. 🗓 Date: Thursday, July 11, 2024 🕛 Time: 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ET Featuring: - Paul Marcille, PhD, licensed psychologist and co-author of "A Legislator’s Guide: Dealing with Distressed Constituents" - Former Rep. Brian Baird, a psychologist who served for 12 years in the US House of Representatives from Washington state 🔗 REGISTER HERE: https://lnkd.in/eukX5-Fj IMPORTANT NOTE: This training complements but does not substitute the specific guidance provided by US Capitol Police and Congressional institutional offices for managing threatening messages. Offices should continue to train staff on these procedures and follow the official guidance. This webinar focuses on best practices for managing distressed constituents and understanding the psychological and personal impacts of these experiences.

The city's budget discussions are heavily centered on public safety and firefighter settlements, highlighting the significant allocation of resources to this area. However, this focus can sometimes overshadow other crucial sectors instrumental to Houston's growth and development, such as the private sector’s contributions to our infrastructure and economy. Given tight financial conditions and the city's alarming long-term deficit, available funds are dwindling. This scenario poses a significant challenge for those in industries that rely on municipal work or partnerships, where there might soon be fewer funds to allocate. If you feel your industry or business is underrepresented or neglected in challenging times, contact me. Leveraging my deep understanding of the local political landscape and a passion for representing diverse business and community needs, I am well-equipped to help you elevate your influence and achieve your strategic goals.
