Electronic Specifier Ltd's Harry Fowle wrote a great piece on gallium nitride (GaN) and how it offers significant advantages over traditional silicon-based semiconductors like increased switching speeds and faster charging. Although GaN design comes with some challenges, its potential is large enough that the GaN power electronics market could exceed $2B by 2025! Traditionally, compound #semiconductor materials like GaN are difficult to manufacture due to crystal defects, but recent experiments with our MST film have shown promising results. #Startup Tackles #Chiplet Design Complexity 💡 Baya Systems is coming out of stealth mode to take the guess work out of #chiplets 👏 In a briefing with EE Times | Electronic Engineering Times, Nandan Nayampally, Baya’s chief commercial officer, said that with #SoC and chiplet system design, as well as #software development complexity exploding, there is also a growing need to accelerate analysis, design, and deployment of chiplets. He said Baya’s broader agenda is to tackle the data movement bottleneck faced by #AI workloads in #heterogeneous #computing environments, or what Baya said is now “intelligent compute.” Nayampally said a more cohesive system is necessary to reduce data movement, even as more complex #memory hierarchies and processing solutions are coupled together. Chiplets provide a solution but even with standardization, there is a need for tools to support an end-to-end workflow as software development for both them and SoCs gets more complex, he added. While a basic concept, the Calibre nmDRC Recon use model of Calibre Real-time Digital is a unique approach that drives a significant improvement in overall verification turn around time. Ampere announces 256-core 3nm #CPU, unveils partnership with Qualcomm 💡 Also looking at #chiplets, integration of third-party #IP Ampere Computing introduced its roadmap for the coming years, including new #CPUs and collaborations with third parties. In particular, the company said it would launch its all-new 256-core AmpereOne #processor next year, made on TSMC's N3 process #technology. Also, Ampere is teaming up with Qualcomm to build #AI inference #servers with the company's accelerators. Apparently, Huawei is also looking at integrating third-party UCIe-compatible #chiplets into its own platforms. Ampere has begun shipping 192-core AmpereOne processors with an eight-channel DDR5 memory subsystem it introduced a year ago. Later this year, the company plans to introduce 192-core AmpereOne CPUs with a 12-channel DDR5 memory subsystem, requiring a brand-new platform. Reflecting on a time when 10 Gbps was the frontier of PCB data rates brings back memories, doesn't it? 😎 This DesignCon2009 paper was a trailblazer in the systematic approach to correlating analysis with measurements for designing predictable interconnects. It describes the first physical layer reference design platform (PLRD-1) featuring 30 test structures to validate our modeling methodology, proving that electromagnetic analysis could indeed predict PCB interconnect behavior. I have been saying this for years and years: The RISC-V ISA is an open specification, not open source! Terminology is important, so quit being lazy and stop calling ANYTHING with the RISC-V label open source without being specific.
