Great news for operators! A more rational CBRS DPA activation methodology has been approved. This will ensure more uptime for broadband fixed wireless providers because channel grants will not be suspended as often. Though there are 15 possible CBRS channels losing one or more does not guarantee that an operator can easily get a replacement or a replacement channel adjacent to other channels. Adjacency is required by many smaller radio vendors to concatenate channels that enable effective broadband speeds and it helps even the efficiency of larger vendors. For those using GAA because they have no PALs or are supplementing their PAL bandwidth with GAA, losing channels forces more users on the remaining GAA channels and thus, interference. This act proves that spectrum sharing is viable and not detrimental to incumbents when deployed with reasonable controls.

States need read this important report: Here is a subset: Why Requiring Unit-Level Connectivity Matters Addressing Digital Inequity and Connecting Unconnected Households For households living in multi-family and public housing, the inability to connect to reliable, affordable broadband is a significant barrier to fully participating in 21st-century society. Unserved and underserved MDUs often house some of the most vulnerable populations, including low-income families, older adults, and individuals with disabilities. The lack of connectivity exacerbates long-standing inequities in access to education, healthcare, job opportunities and training, and other vital assistance programs. By requiring eligible BEAD subgrantees to demonstrate how their proposals will ensure unit-level connectivity, state broadband offices can directly address the digital divide within these communities and achieve the objectives of the BEAD Program.  Without ensuring unit-level connectivity, you risk leaving thousands of households in your state without access. Ensuring that each unit has access to high-speed internet means providing these residents with the tools they need to participate fully in the digital economy and access remote learning, telehealth, and other essential online services. Unit-level connectivity requirements, either through direct fiber connections or managed Wi-Fi solutions, ensure that every residential end-user has access. This leads to more reliable and consistent internet performance, and the state ensures no home is left offline. Collaboration between eligible subgrantees will also be key to the successful BEAD-funded broadband deployment. States should encourage BEAD applicants, especially traditional Internet Service Providers (ISPs), to explore partnerships with managed service providers (MSPs) to reach individual residential units effectively. By leveraging the expertise of specialized providers, such as MSPs, states can ensure comprehensive coverage and competition in the marketplace.

On the #security front, issue #8 of 3GPP newsletter contains an article on the Security Assurance (#SCAS) specifications developed by SA WG3. Thanks to my colleagues in SA3, we have been prolific in creating Security Assurance specifications for all major EPC nodes, eNB (4G) and almost all 5G core network nodes. Theses specifications define the basic fundamental test cases which are are used in the GSMA NESAS certification program which are mandatory for the EU and many other regional #cyber-certification and compliance programs.

Thanks to my friends and industry colleagues who participated in the poll. The poll was well attended and had a mixed response. The question for the poll was: In best radio condition, which one of the following options will lead to better spectral efficiency assuming UE supports both the options ·       Option-1: Using 256QAM over 64QAM·       Option-2: Using 2*2MIMO over SISO Here is my take on this: As in the image below, we can notice that going for higher order modulation does not necessarily mean it will increase data by 100% all the time. Beyond 16QAM, the improvement with every higher modulation scheme is just incremental in order of 2 bits/symbol. It is like 4bits Vs 6bits, 6bits Vs 8bits, 8bits Vs 10bits per symbol. Data rate Improvement by using 256QAM over 64 QAM is just about 30%. Where in with 2*2 MIMO in a good radio condition, 2 layers of data transmission (Spatial multiplexing) can be achieved, compared to 1 layer of transmission in SISO. That can result in improvement of data rate by approximately 100%. So, 2*2 MIMO over SISO would result in better spectral efficiency compared to using 256QAM over 64QAM. The US government continues to support the development of the Open RAN ecosystem as it seeks to widen vendor choice for operators networks. The $420 million in new funding announced by the Commerce Department's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is a significant boost for the development of open radio units. This initiative has two key aims: ▪ Commercialisation: Accelerating readiness for commercial trials to prove the technology's viability for wider deployment. This has been a long held reservation on the new technology. Many operators we speak with have concerns about wide level commercial deployments in existing infrastructure. ▪ Innovation: Supporting R&D efforts in Open RAN performance and capabilities to drive the technology forward. The investment is a clear signal that the US remains committed to fostering a competitive, diversified telecoms equipment market. I noted a story last week about a collaboration between Ericsson, Qualcomm Technologies, and industrial drone solutions provider Dronus. In a trial at The Ericsson USA 5G Smart Factory, the consortium has successfully tested a 5G mmWave-powered autonomous drone for indoor inventory management. The natively 5G mmWave-connected drone performed several indoor missions within the factory, including autonomous inventory checks. By taking advantage of 5G on mmWave's speeds and latency capabilities, the drone scans barcodes for real-time inventory tracking. This solution not only streamlines processes but also highlights the growing importance of 5G in industrial automation. When looking at the opportunities for 5G in various industry verticals, manufacturing is one of the leading environments where the technology is making a difference. These proof of concept trials are important to showcase how the emergence of standalone 5G offers many industries fresh opportunities. Indoor drones are an example of areas that are likely to be an essential sector in large manufacturing transformations in the future. Offering transferable and easily deployed opportunities will unlock the value. While #5G #privatenetworks, #RedCap, and #mmWave are generating excitement in 2024, it's not a one-size-fits-all situation. Private networks offer customization for specific industries but require technical expertise and investment. Red Cap, a new SDN approach for managing networks, is still in early stages of adoption. mmWave boasts ultra-fast speeds but has limited range and requires expensive infrastructure. #Standalone 5G, with its full potential, faces gradual rollout as operators prioritize leveraging existing 4G infrastructure with Non-Standalone 5G. The reality is, the choice depends on individual needs, existing infrastructure, and technology maturity. #Hybrid approaches and ongoing innovation might shape the future landscape, so staying informed is key to understanding how 5G deployments evolve throughout #2024. 5G Release 16 introduced features that enhance mobile broadband speeds, ultra-reliable low-latency communication for real-time applications, and massive machine-type communication for the Internet of Things. While deployments are ongoing and commercialization is evolving, these features hold significant promise. One particularly interesting area is 5G Non-Public Networks (#NPNs) for media production. Release 16 enables collaboration with third-party networks, giving #media companies flexibility. They can share existing infrastructure with network operators to save on deployment costs, or integrate their private NPN with a public network to extend coverage and leverage additional services. This translates to benefits like enhanced reliability, scalability, and security for media production tasks, with a dedicated network offering more control and reduced risk of interference. However, it's important to remember that 5G NPNs with third-party collaboration are a new feature. While the groundwork is laid in Release 16, real-world deployments are likely still in the early stages. Widespread adoption will depend on factors like compatible equipment availability, service offerings from network providers, and media production companies' willingness to invest and integrate NPNs into their workflows. Arista Networks revealed in February that it has design wins for fairly large AI clusters. Jayshree Ullal, co-founder and chief executive officer at the company, provided some insight into how these wins are progressing towards money and how it sets Arista Networks up to reach its stated goal of $750 million in AI networking revenue by 2025. “This cluster,” Ullal said on the call referring to the Meta Platforms cluster, “tackles complex AI training tasks that involve a mix of model and data parallelization across thousands of processors, and Ethernet is proving to offer at least 10 percent improvement of job completion performance across all packet sizes versus InfiniBand. We are witnessing an inflection of AI networking and expect this to continue throughout the year and decade. Ethernet is emerging as a critical infrastructure across both front-end and back-end AI data centers. AI applications simply cannot work in isolation and demand seamless communication among the compute nodes consisting of back-end GPUs and AI accelerators, as well as the front-end nodes like the CPUs alongside storage.” Outstanding work Arista Networks! Introducing O-RAN Y1 Near Real-Time RIC open interface The Y1, O-RAN ALLIANCE's new open interface, introduces a dynamic pathway for enhanced communication and analytics between the near-real-time RAN Intelligent Controller (near-RT RIC) and both internal and external systems. This interface is not just a technical addition; it’s a strategic enabler that broadens the scope of O-RAN capabilities towards more adaptive, intelligent, and integrated network operations. ◼ Y1 Open Interface The Y1 interface in the O-RAN architecture facilitates the sharing of Radio Analytics Information (RAI) from the near-RT RIC to various authorized consumers. The promise of fireworks between the leaders of Coherent and Lumentum was somewhat realized during the CEO panel at the Optica Executive Forum at OFC 2024 (please see: https://lnkd.in/d7nNbwMP). This writer asked Chuck Mattera if he had to do it all over again, would there have been such an emphasis in striving to take out Alan Lowe and his corporation, such as engaging in a price war on 3D sensing (rather than taking advantage of relatively stable pricing with a duopoly), and spending an exorbitant amount on the original Coherent, mainly to keep it out of the hands of the arch-rival, only for Lumentum’s top line to be ultimately rescued by Google with the Cloud Light acquisition (please see: https://lnkd.in/dvEuyKxs). Chuck adamantly and forcefully responded that he would not have done anything differently. Alan then vigorously drove home to his opponent the huge amount of debt assumed in the purchase of Coherent by “II-VI” and avoided by his own firm. fibeReality has certainly been quite critical of the top-level management at Lumentum as well (please see: https://lnkd.in/gZzZd_2t). Chuck gets credit in transforming a second-tier optical components supplier into one of the dominant vendors in the world. In general, he did not look very happy at the event, which may raise a question about there being totally personal intent on his retirement announcement, although we are unaware of any evidence to the contrary. Hopefully, he will find other ways to use that abundant energy in other productive ways that will result in ample satisfaction, helping to ensure a healthy and long remainder to his life.

Historically, with every new “G”, network players drop out. As we approach 5G’s twilight a dropout from among the largest players - Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung Networks - seems unlikely, and the competition for market share will heat up. Winning will be about filling in the technological cracks in areas like cybersecurity and private networking. Those solutions will come from early stage companies in the Connected Ecosystem, where Stormbreaker Ventures is focused.
