The hardest thing for me to accept in AI VC right now is how little of the scene I can actually see myself. When Marina Davidova and I started investing in AI/ML startups in 2015, we saw most of what was happening since we knew everyone within one or two handshakes. Now, the space has become so big that entire industries have emerged that I didn't know about. It's good that we have a very active LP community to amplify our reach; otherwise, there's too much happening for any small team to grasp. This also highlights the need for automating analysis and deal flow - too much to look at in very little time.

The best form of capital for founders is one you’ve probably never heard of… Here’s what you need to know about patient capital ⬇️ Patient capital is a segment of startup investing where investors prioritize both growth and sustainability. There are a couple of differences between patient capital and venture capital: 1. VC wants you to prioritize growth over everything else.  Patient capital wants you to grow, but do so in a way that makes sense and doesn’t jeopardize the future of your company. 2. VC has a 7-10 year timeline for a liquidity event like an exit. Patient capital doesn’t have a firm timeline - hence the ‘patient’ part. 3. VC wants an exit in the form of an IPO or acquisition.  Patient capital investors are, of course, fine with an IPO or acquisition, but they are also fine with receiving dividends from your profits. For any founders interested in seeking patient capital as a source of funding, here are some investors to check out: - Collab Capital - Invests through their SPACE agreement and takes a return through profit-sharing - Calm Company Fund - Invests through their SEAL agreement and takes a return through retained earnings OR an exit - Acumen - Invests patient capital impact-driven businesses prioritizing social good over financial returns There is nothing wrong with wanting to build a big, VC-backed company. But there’s also nothing wrong with building the next $10M/year company.
