Super Bowl XLIX/Verizon Wireless/NFL House Project
Had the privilege of working with our awesome Creative Technology and Experiential Teams to design and build out a 400+ and a 200+ device wall that streamed 4K video 24/7 for about 2 weeks straight.
The devices were all Samsung phones and tablets. Our developers built out all the apps, front-end, and back-end logic. I architected and designed the network infrastructure to handle everything (video streaming, DNS, DHCP, security, etc). The devices were all Samsung phones and tablets. Our developers built out all the apps, front-end, and back-end logic. I architected and designed the network infrastructure to handle everything (video streaming, DNS, DHCP, security, etc). We used Apache to host the site and had a private WiFi network (powered by Ubiquiti Networks UniFi AP's and firewalls) that served all the content to the devices and helped keep them in sync.
We were competing with dozens of other WiFi networks at the event and our system was able to stay up and running with virtually zero downtime during the 2 weeks the displays were up.
Here is a small summary of the technologies used to make this project possible:
* Cisco - network switches
* Ubiquiti - WiFi and firewalls
* Ubuntu - server OS
* Dell - servers
* Rackspace - hosting, backup, scalability
* Apache 2, UFW, DNS, DHCP, etc.
* Sendgrid - SMTP MTA
* Server Density - real-time monitoring
* And some others that I can't remember off the top

Architected, planned, deployed, and maintained the JamWithTheSlams.com site and systems. It was a holiday project for our client (Denny's) that let users submit photos of themselves to create animated holiday musical videos.
Due to the potential viral nature of the application, the system had to be robust enough to process hundreds of concurrent users and videos. The application had to have a fast loading and streaming user experience as well.
The back end system consisted of the…Architected, planned, deployed, and maintained the JamWithTheSlams.com site and systems. It was a holiday project for our client (Denny's) that let users submit photos of themselves to create animated holiday musical videos.
Due to the potential viral nature of the application, the system had to be robust enough to process hundreds of concurrent users and videos. The application had to have a fast loading and streaming user experience as well.
The back end system consisted of the following:
* 2 - NGINX web servers running off Ubuntu 14.04.03 LTS - these handled all the initial front-end traffic coming to the site.
* Traffic was routed through a Rackspace Cloud Load Balancer over HTTPS and load-balanced between the front-end systems.
* Another load balancer sat between the front-end systems and the backend (also via HTTPS) to route video processing requests to our rendering farm.
* Rendering farm consisted of 2 initial servers (also Ubuntu 14.04.03 LTS) but could scale seamlessly to any number of servers as needed. These servers were 100% dedicated to video rendering using SlimerJS, nodeJS, custom BASH scripts, Slack integration, etc.
* The final rendered videos were then uploaded to our CDN (Rackspace CDN) for permanent hosting and served to end users via our front-end web servers.
Over the lifetime of the promotion (October through December) over 11 thousand videos were created by users from all over the world with zero downtime. The rendering servers were able to process multiple videos at the same time with little latency due to the load balancer routing and monitoring.Other creators -
