Mahalo to Dr. Kyu Rhee, MD, MPP, for taking time during his recent trip to Hawaii to stop in for a visit and tour of Waikiki Health. Dr. Rhee, President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Community Health Centers (pictured in center) met with our leadership team to discuss challenges and opportunities facing Community Health Centers (CHCs) like Waikiki Health. FQHCs (Federally Qualified Health Centers) including Waikiki Health, along with 1,400 other CHCs across the country, provide quality, comprehensive healthcare services to more than 31.5 million patients annually. Staffing remains one of the biggest challenges CHCs face nationwide. On May 22, 2024, Alexis Charpentier, Waikiki Health’s Chief Executive Officer, graduated from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a master’s in public health degree. She graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA and was inducted into the prestigious Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health, Alpha Chapter through a highly selective process that assesses a person’s outstanding performance and devotion to the field of Public Health. Honorees must demonstrate qualities of outstanding leadership in public health and a potential for making significant contributions to the field of public health. At her commencement, students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health recited a declaration of Health Rights, which states: “Access to affordable health care is a human right. Health services should be effective, safe, equitable, and responsive to individual needs. Achieving health equity is everyone’s responsibility and requires a commitment to advancing the physical, environmental, economic, social, and political conditions necessary to support all people in the work attaining their full health potential”. This statement perfectly reflects both Alexis and Waikiki Health. Congratulations!

When growth in an agency happens, its sometimes because staff move on to achieve higher goals, which is the case with our staff at Waikiki Health's PATH Clinic. Aloha to Faizah (Community Health Educator) who is returning to UH to complete her masters, and to Marrissa (Administrative Assistant) who is also moving on to complete her masters in public health. We wish both GEM (Going the Extra Mile) employees great success and hope they return one day to help serve the needs of our patients. If you know anyone interested in applying for either of these positions, or looking for a career in community health work, please share this link to our Career Page. https://lnkd.in/gwCmt-_b

Welcome our new CEO! Alexis Charpentier joins Waikiki Health as the new Chief Executive Officer. Alexis comes to us from the Hawaii State Department of Heath as a HIV Public Health Supervisor, Epidemiological Specialist IV. Prior to that, she worked at Waikiki Health as a HIV Quality Improvement Specialist and most recently worked as the Director, Prevention at National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors (NASTAD), a leading national non-partisan non-profit association based in Washington D.C. that represents public health officials who administer HIV and hepatitis programs. Alexis states she is grateful and honored to return to the organization that spearheaded her career in public health. “Waikiki Health will always hold a special place in my heart. As a local Native Hawaiian, who is fortunate to be able to trace her Hawaiian lineage back hundreds of years, it’s important that Waikiki Health have leaders that reflect the patients and community they serve.”
