Children with disabilities in displacement settings frequently face stigma and discrimination. Our latest P&A brief by Victoria Walker is now live, offering insights and recommendations for protecting children with disabilities in humanitarian responses. This week, USCRI is celebrating the fifth anniversary of our Rinconcito del Sol shelter. Rinconcito is a safe and welcoming temporary home for unaccompanied girls between the ages of 10 and 17 and provides the girls with quality care and services. Yesterday, USCRI Latin America and the Caribbean presented a $10,000 donation to Pro Amore Dei shelter in Tijuana, Mexico. This donation will support essential improvements, ensuring better conditions for migrants in need. USCRI Mexico will continue to provide vital support to shelters like Pro Amore Dei. Through our FOCAL program, USCRI Mexico empowers migrant shelters in Tijuana, like Pro Amore Dei by mobilizing student volunteers to enhance shelter capacity. In this program, USCRI Mexico also organizes thematic virtual workshops to strengthen the capabilities of these shelters. USCRI Mexico works with a number of migrant shelters in Tijuana through the US-Mexico Border Program. In collaboration with our field office in San Diego, USCRI Mexico's legal team informs migrants through Know Your Rights presentations and shares updated information about the CBP One app.

As more and more people are forced from their homes due to conflict, instability, climate change, and persecution, humanitarian protections are being chipped away by proposed policies. The U.S. has a long-standing tradition of providing refuge and prides itself on upholding human rights. We must honor this tradition and maintain robust refugee resettlement programs, ensure fair and efficient access to asylum, and provide support to humanitarian organizations. You can be a part of ensuring this country keeps its promises to help those seeking safety. Take action: Refugees.org/action

As we celebrate #4thofJuly and the spirit of freedom and independence it represents, we must advocate for those displaced by violence, persecution, and instability and fight for their right to live safe, free lives. Everyone deserves to live free.

USCRI commends today's announcement from the DHS to extend and redesignate #TPSforHaiti for 18 months, safeguarding an estimated 309,000 eligible Haitian nationals residing in the U.S. Gangs in #Haiti control over 80% of Port-au-Prince and perpetrate killings, abductions, sexual violence, and other abuses, causing mass displacement. Over 578,000 people are #IDPs. "A safe and dignified return to Haiti is impossible with the ongoing humanitarian and protection crisis,” said USCRI President and CEO Eskinder Negash. “Today’s decision by the Biden administration is a critical step to protect Haitians from harm." While welcoming #TPSforHaiti, USCRI implores the Administration to halt deportations and maritime forced returns to #Haiti. We must stand with the people of Haiti, not deport them.
