Merrillville encompasses 31 square miles that was once densely covered with forest. It's gently rolling topography lends itself to cultivation and the soil is fertile. In 1971 the designation of Merrillville was applied to most of the township boundries. Today, Merrillville enjoys great diversity in housing, residents, and culture. It is rich with business districts that support the 35,000 residents an over 100,000 visitors each day that travel through the town located at the crossroads of Interstate 65 and U.S. Route 30. Merrillville is a destination for many. The town operates under a town goverenment structure with 7 elected town council persons as well as a full time judge and clerk-teasurer.
