How can we increase the use of mass timber in the built environment and take full advantage of its sustainable qualities? Incorporating it into more tall and midrise buildings is just one solution. As part of the “Mass Timber Semester” lecture series hosted by The Skyscraper Museum, a panel of experts will discuss the rise of mass-timber and hybrid structural systems and ways of optimizing their use. Speakers include mass timber specialists Vice President Alejandro Fernandez of Thornton Tomasetti, Benton Johnson of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), EQUILIBRIUM's Eric Karsh and Daniel Safarik, the director of research at the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and co-author of the CTBUH Technical Guides on Tall Timber. The in-person event, “Tall Timber: Height & Hybrids,” will take place next Tuesday, July 23, at our New York office, at 120 Broadway, at 6:00 p.m. Registration is required. There will be a livestream of the session on the museum’s YouTube channel. Follow the link for more information and to RSVP: https://lnkd.in/e85uKTPH (Pictured is Ascent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for which Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design, construction engineering and special inspection services.) #masstimber #engineering #structuralengineering

When it comes to producing more sustainable steel, it’s not just about recycling and efficient manufacturing processes. Alternative technologies can also help significantly lower its carbon footprint. In our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/daPJkNuj), Senior Project Consultant Nisha Kakde of our Sustainability and Resilience practice shares her research into these technologies and sheds some light on how they can foster a sustainable transition.   Whether it’s electric arc furnaces, electrolysis, hydrogen and other alternative fuels, or methods like carbon capture and storage, the use of biochar and reconversion of blast-furnace off-gas, innovative solutions offer a promising path toward achieving net-zero emissions in steel manufacturing.   Follow our "Here’s How Embodied Carbon" podcast, hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, on your favorite streaming service, including Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, PodBean and Spotify.      #HeresHowPodcast #HeresHowClimateAction #sustainability #embodiedcarbon #steel

What better way to embrace this year's International Women in Engineering Day theme of #EnhancedByEngineering than by hearing from someone who has been promoting the wonders of design and STEM to girls and boys around the world? Earlier this week, our Women@TT employee network group celebrated INWED (which this year fell on a Sunday) by hosting a talk by Ruth Amos, an award-winning inventor, engineer, author, presenter and co-host of the YouTube channel “Kids Invent Stuff” (https://lnkd.in/ewS7Vtzm). On the popular channel, kids ages 4 to 11 get the opportunity to see their ideas built and tested. Ruth was named Young Engineer of Britain in 2006 for her invention StairSteady, a handrail and sliding supporting handle that helps those with limited mobility climb stairs more easily. Ruth discussed her personal journey, including how she discovered her passion for engineering, the challenges that young girls and women can face when entering a traditionally male-dominated field, founding STEM outreach projects and programs and her new book, “The Inventor's Workshop: 10 Inventions That Changed the World.” And of course, we watched clips of some of those clever inventions from her YouTube show—doorbell popcorn maker, anyone? #INWED24 #InternationalWomenInEngineeringDay

"If all cement produced in the U.S. in 2019 had been converted to PLC (portland-limestone cement), it would have reduced CO2 emissions by 8.1 million metric tons—that’s equivalent to taking 1.75 million cars off the road for a year," explains Patrick Kenny, vice president, in our latest podcast (https://lnkd.in/eVxwm9Zx).   Tune in to hear why many major markets are making the switch to PLC, as host Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan and Patrick discuss its environmental benefits. With performance as good or better than traditional portland cement, PLC can offer a 5-10% reduction in embodied carbon. You can follow our "Here’s How Embodied Carbon" podcast on your favorite streaming service, including Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, PodBean and Spotify. #HeresHowPodcast #HeresHowClimateAction #sustainability #embodiedcarbon #concrete #cement

MetLife Stadium is getting ready for some fútbol. The Copa América soccer tournament rolls into East Rutherford, New Jersey, this evening with a highly anticipated match between defending Copa América and World Cup champions Argentina, led by soccer superstar Lionel Messi, and Chile. The 82,550-seat venue, home to the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, will also host the June 27 game between Uruguay and Bolivia and the semi-final on July 9. Thornton Tomasetti provided structural design and construction engineering services to Skanska, HOK and EwingCole for the 2.2-million-square-foot design-build stadium (https://lnkd.in/eX_N9zXA), which opened in 2010. If you miss tonight’s game, there may be another opportunity to catch Messi in action in the Garden State. Metlife will also host the 2026 World Cup final, and sports pundits are betting that the GOAT will be back for a shot at a second consecutive World Cup title.
