About us
The SC Vocational Rehabilitation Department prepares and assists eligible South Carolinians with disabilities to achieve and maintain competitive employment. SCVRD prides itself on being a good steward of its public funding. The department ranks at or near the top nationally in many vocational rehabilitation service categories. We’re proud that the department’s efficiency and effectiveness are a national model for VR agencies. But our most rewarding benefits are realized when our clients, who have been dependent on tax-supported benefits, become taxpayers as they enter competitive employment.

July is Disability Pride Month. Each color stripe in the flag has meaning: red-physical disabilities; gold-neurodiversity; white-invisible disabilities; blue-emotional and psychiatric disabilities; green-sensory disabilities. The black background represents mourning and rage for victims of violence and abuse.

Shout out to Techniplas Anderson who partnered with our local Anderson office for job training for future employees. With assistance from VR, Tyrell and Ryan worked for 4 weeks at Techniplas as temporary employees and were ultimately hired on full-time. Congratulations Tyrell and Ryan and thank you Techniplas for understanding that disability does not mean inability. We appreciate the partnership!

South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD) Commissioner Felicia W. Johnson begins her one-year term today as President of the Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation (CSAVR). “I am honored to serve as the Council’s President for the 2024-2025 year,” said Johnson. “I look forward to advancing our mission and strengthening our partnerships with education and business to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve employment,” she added. Commissioner Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from South Carolina State University. Since becoming SCVRD Commissioner in 2018, she has used her 20 plus years of field experience to shape the agency and move it into its next era. “Serving as President of CSAVR provides a unique opportunity to help shape the future of services to individuals with disabilities while collaborating with businesses on a national level to ensure their workforce needs are met. Disability does not mean inability, just a different ability,” Johnson stated. Johnson’s term commences today and continues through June 30, 2025. About CSAVR: CSAVR is composed of the chief administrators of the public rehabilitation agencies serving individuals with physical and mental disabilities in the United States, District of Columbia, and the US territories. These agencies constitute the state partners in the State-Federal program of rehabilitation services provided under the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as amended. The Council’s members supervise the rehabilitation of some 1.2 million persons with disabilities. About SCVRD: The South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD) prepares and assists eligible South Carolinians with disabilities to achieve and maintain competitive employment. SCVRD is an agency of the South Carolina state government and is governed by a board of seven members representing each congressional district.
