The Jensen Project is a nonprofit organization fueling strategic partnerships in the fight against sexual violence.

About us

We believe we’re stronger together. As a rape survivor, our founder Janet Jensen discovered that organizations are doing the hard work needed, but faced similar obstacles. This journey led her to create The Jensen Project, unifying local nonprofits in the fight against sexual violence.

Julie Valentine is a traveling forensic nurse who treats patients across three states. In her presentation at the Conference on Crimes Against Women 2024, she shared data from her encounters showing how vulnerable mental illness makes women to sexual assault. While only 1 in 5 women in the United States have a mental illness, over 40% of her patients reported having a mental illness during their SANE exams. Additionally, most of the women who disclosed a mental illness to Valentine also said they met their perpetrator on a dating app. Online dating and other activities often pose risk, but that risk may be increased for women with mental illness. #CCAW24 #SAAM #EndAbuse #endsexualviolence

In early April, a hearing was held to discuss the ramifications of a bill introduced in Rhode Island supporting full decriminalization of the sex trade. Survivor leaders from multiple partner agencies, including WorldWE, Rights4Girls, National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE), Safe Exit Initiative, Amirah, and My Life My Choice, attended to highlight the harm full decriminalization could do in Rhode Island. Historically, Rhode Island legalized indoor prostitution through a loophole in the law from 1980–2009. Survivors testified at the hearing, sharing their stories of the exploitation they experienced during that time. The Jensen Project is proud of the strength shared in survivors' testimonies and the work being done in Rhode Island to prevent further exploitation and harm from happening.  #EndExploitation #SurvivorVoices #EndTrafficking #endsexualviolence

Historically, those found guilty have had their Second Amendment rights revoked due to the clear link between firearm possession and homicide in domestic violence cases. However, two years ago, United States v Rahimi put that in jeopardy. Last week, the Supreme Court determined that those convicted of domestic violence charges cannot possess a firearm. What a win for the anti-violence movement! #USvRahimi #SecondAmendment #EndAbuse #enditmovement

Sex trafficking victims at illicit massage businesses are primarily East Asian, and there are three key reasons for this: over a century of anti-Asian immigration policies in the United States, the Vietnam and Korean wars where US soldiers exploited overseas brothels and began fetishizing Asian women, and the misrepresentation and continued stereotyping of Asian women in American media. According to Chris Muller-Tabanera from The Network at the Conference on Crimes Against Women, policy, war, and stereotyping are the main culprits for the exploitation of Asian women in the United States. With this knowledge, we can find the formula for their liberation. #CCAW24 #StopAsianHate #EndTrafficking #endsexualviolence

Did you know that "fawning" and "appeasement" are not synonyms? According to Ruby Jo Walker at the Conference on Crimes Against Women 2024, they are two different fear responses with distinct pathways through the polyvagal system. Appeasement occurs when a victim intentionally bonds with their perpetrator to convince them they are on the same "team" to avoid harm. An appeaser must fluctuate between fear and calm to form this connection. Fawning, or placating, is more of a reflex. Adults who fawn were likely abused as children, resulting in an underdeveloped sense of self and safety. Fawning involves giving in to the assailant's wishes in hopes of reducing violence or harm. Of all the fear responses, fawning is the one most likely to lead to homicide. There are no "bad" responses to fear, only ones that are more or less effective at keeping someone safe. If you see yourself in either of these definitions, we recommend reaching out to a counselor for support. #CCAW2024 #EndAbuse #EndTrafficking #endsexualviolence
