The world’s top companies are taking action now to reach net-zero carbon by 2040.

About us

The Climate Pledge is a cross-sector community of companies, organizations, individuals, and partners, working together to crack the climate crisis and solve the challenges of decarbonizing our economy. Bringing together those that are prepared to run the furthest and fastest, The Climate Pledge calls on signatories to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040—10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Amazon co-founded the Climate Pledge with Global Optimism in 2019, and became the first signatory of the pledge. Currently, the Climate Pledge has 500+ signatories from diverse business sectors including transport, aviation, energy, real estate, software, and more.

Like Climate Pledge Arena, Co-Op Live has centered sustainability in every aspect of the building: ☀️6,400 square meters of solar panels on the arena roof (about the size of the football pitch at its neighboring Etihad Stadium. Hello #ManCity ⚽) 🌊100% recycled rainwater for the loos 💐Increased biodiversity with new trees and wildflowers planted around the arena’s perimeter and along the CityLink Walkway 🥑Locally sourced food and plant-based options 🥤Water filling stations, zero single-use plastic bottles, and a reusable cup program ❎Zero waste direct to landfills 🚲Sustainable travel options through tram, bus, cycle, and CityLink Walkway The Co-Op Live Arena will also seek an “excellent” accreditation from BREEAM to become the most sustainable venue in all of #Europe. Local girls in Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve in #Peru wait for a group to arrive at the ancient town of Huaquis where a traditional water festival is celebrated. During the festival, locals clean the water channels that are part of an incredible 700-year-old pre-Incan system for water storage and distribution that is being used again today. Long ago, the Yauyos—a civilization that thrived here before the Incas—engineered canals and dams that allowed them to release water when needed, or hold the water in reserve for dry days, including the six-month-long dry season. They developed a way to preserve water through a complex system of reservoirs, dams, and diversion channels that collect both spring water and glacier melt to irrigate pastures and fields. Today, locals have refurbished the ancient water management system that results in a perfect marriage of contemporary science and ancestral knowledge. Suppliers can play a crucial role in reducing a business’ total GHG emissions—and with the right tools and resources in hand, they can do it quickly. In an effort to accelerate supply chain decarbonization, The Climate Pledge co-founder, Amazon, recently announced “The Amazon Sustainability Exchange,” a one-stop shop of guidelines, playbooks, science models, and resources, all based on proprietary learnings from Amazon’s own journey to decarbonize. At launch, the Amazon Sustainability Exchange will focus on seven key impact areas (Buildings, Carbon Neutralization, Carbon-Free Energy, Human Rights, Transportation, Waste and Circularity, and Water Stewardship). It will also include proprietary information such as: ➡️ A Measurement and Reporting Playbook detailing how to develop a carbon goal, identifying abatement opportunities, and other insights from years of measuring and reporting data across Amazon’s global operations. ➡️ A Carbon-Free Energy Playbook, which shares Amazon’s lessons learned as the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy for the last four years. ➡️ A guide to buildings that leverages all learning surrounding the development of HQ2 and Amazon’s International Living Institute’s Zero-Carbon certified buildings, whether grocery stores, warehouses, corporate offices, or others. ➡️ A “starter” guide to establishing a water stewardship program, sharing what Amazon has learned on the path to be water positive across its data centers by 2030. Set goal. Work smart. Achieve goal. Repeat. Amazon did just that. Five years ago they set out to achieve 100% renewable energy across their operations—including data centers—by 2030. Not only have they hit that target, they’ve hit it seven years ahead of schedule. The path was not linear; strategy and investments had to evolve, new policies were put in place, and innovation and invention were key. The road to their 2040 Climate Pledge net zero commitments is still long and winding with obstacles like the increasing demand for generative AI, but the company is very optimistic and laser-focused on what it will take to get there. For four years running #Amazon has been the biggest corporate purchaser of renewable energy in the world. They’ve invested billions of dollars in more than 500 solar and wind projects globally (enough to power 7.2 million homes). And that’s just the tip of the iceberg: ➡️ Amazon’s renewable energy portfolio will help avoid an estimated 26.7 million tons of carbon per year once all projects are operational. ➡️ Amazon has enabled renewable energy projects in 27 countries over five years ➡️ Amazon is the first corporation to enable utility-scale renewable energy projects in India, Greece, South Africa, Japan, and Indonesia, among other countries. ➡️ Amazon enabled almost 300 on-site solar projects on its rooftops and properties. ➡️ Operations are beginning at Delta Wind, the first utility-scale wind farm in Mississippi. ➡️ Amazon is the top corporate purchaser of offshore wind globally, according to BloombergNEF. ➡️ Amazon enabled Japan’s first utility-scale aggregated solar project that was backed by a corporate Power Purchase Agreement. ➡️ Amazon is engaging with energy regulators to find new ways to support grid modernization, remove permitting obstacles, and deploy grid enhancing technologies. “Currently, zero-emission fuel solutions are either nascent or not even commercially viable yet,” says ZEMBA President and CEO Ingrid Irigoyen. “This is the problem we are coming together to solve.” As part of the The Aspen Institute Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) is catalyzing the creation of a zero-emission market in the maritime space with other Pledge signatories such as Amazon, Brooks Running, Sport-Thieme GmbH, Philips, Reckitt, and Schneider Electric. The Aspen Institute recently launched an article “How the shipping industry is combatting its global emissions”—part of the World Ocean Council's #BlueHorizon series produced for them by BBC StoryWorks. In it, they address how the maritime sector can come together to stop the shipping industry’s projected emissions from rising to almost double what they are today. We, the people have a fundamental right to breathe fresh air, to be free from ecological destruction, and to live in a world with ethical, balanced, and responsible uses of land and renewable resources. Now, more than ever, consumers are increasingly aware of how racism and structural inequities contribute to climate change. But, individual stewardship of natural resources will not be enough. Business leaders must address consumer sentiment and prioritize investing in environmental justice solutions—particularly those led by frontline communities.

You don’t have to sacrifice delivery speed for sustainability! One of Amazon's Same-Day Delivery sites in California has now made history as North America’s first-ever fulfillment center to earn the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) Zero Carbon Certification. The certification is the first worldwide third-party standard for lower-carbon buildings. The building boasts cutting-edge technology that aids in reducing carbon emissions and enhancing operational efficiency. It is also located near customers in the Sacramento area, enabling rapid delivery—sometimes within five hours of a customer's purchase. The Sacramento fulfillment center now sits amongst other prominent, ILFI-certified building such as, Climate Pledge Arena—the world’s largest ILFI-certified building—and an Amazon Fresh grocery store—the first ILFI-certified grocery store—both located in Seattle, WA.
