#FunFoodFactFriday On July 12, 1927, the “Green Giant” Great Big Tender Peas trademark was registered. The Green Giant company was founded in 1903 in Le Sueur, MN by a group of investors. It originally was named the Minnesota Valley Canning Company. The MVCC originally sold creamed corn and added peas in 1907 and corn in 1939. The first peas sold were a smaller variety of pea, but in 1925, a company executive found a larger, sweeter pea from England. To market the new pea, the company named the pea “Green Giant” and created a mascot. The original Green Giant mascot wasn’t green at all – he was a scowling white caveman wearing a bearskin rather than foliage. In 1935, the Green Giant got a friendlier image. Advertising executive Leo Burnett (the creator of Tony the Tiger, the Pillsbury Doughboy, and Toucan Sam) was hired to give the giant an update. He gave the giant a leafy suit, and a smile, and termed him the “Jolly Green Giant.” In 1950, the name of the company was changed from the MVCC to the Green Giant Company, and the Jolly Green Giant became the company-wide logo. Green Giant was acquired in 2015 by B&G Foods Inc., though the canned goods portion of Green Giant was sold to Seneca Foods Corporation in November 2023. Other Fun Facts: *** In Blue Earth, MN, there is a 55-foot fiberglass statue of the Jolly Green Giant, which attracts over 10,000 visitors a year. *** The Green Giant Company is also responsible for a variety of new techniques in the canning industry, including vacuum packing and using gravity separators to measure and separate peas during manufacturing. In 1934, they invented the heat unit method, which forecasts when crops are ready for harvest. *** Green Giant’s “Nominate a Giant” program partnered with Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center to nominate both kids and adults who stand up against bullies and recognize them on social media. More recently, they supported St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and No Kid Hungry with their Friendsgiving campaign. #foodmanufacturing #cpgindustry #nowyouknow #forhireresults
