Today, SPA interns and employees connected in-person and virtually with SPA President Terry Benedict for his Intern Lunch and Learn presentation. Terry reminded the group of the age-old quote, “Do what you love and you will never work a day," remarking he's only worked 10 days his entire life!"   Terry discussed the importance of recognizing a turning point in your career, knowing your true north, and learning to be a follower before being a good leader. He shared with the group, "The right answer is always the right answer, no matter how much someone wants it faster, cheaper, better, their way, or now," "Push information, don't make your supervisor pull it," and "Make your decision and never second guess it." Terry ended the presentation with meaningful advice, "Recognize that your job is what you do. SPA employees and interns toured the USS New Jersey (SSN 796), a Virginia-class attack submarine, in Norfolk, VA. These submarines are designed for open-ocean and coastal missions, with advanced stealth, sophisticated surveillance capabilities, and special warfare enhancements that enable them to meet the Navy’s multi-mission requirements. Despite the rain, SPA interns were excited to take part in this hands-on opportunity that directly relates to the solutions SPA delivers to the Department of Defense. Yesterday, SPA had the honor of hosting Kimberly Mitchell, Senior Advisor and VSO Liaison at the Office of the Secretary, Department of Veterans Affairs. Ms. Mitchell spoke to the group about her early life in Vietnam before being adopted by an American Airman, her career in the US Navy, and her mission to advocate for the needs and rights of veterans and their families. Leveraging her leadership skills, she has cofounded, led, and consulted for several organizations that support veterans, military families, and Gold Star Families, transforming perceptions of the veteran community. Ms. Mitchell discussed key changes that occurred to the PACT Act, a law that expands VA health care and benefits for veterans exposed to Agent Orange and other toxic substances. Two of SPA’s employee resource groups, SPA VETS and MERIT (Multicultural Excellence, Recognition, and Individual Talent) served as sponsors for Ms. Mitchell’s informative and well-received presentation. Today, SPA's Marketing and Communications team took the floor for the Intern Lunch and Learn, bringing a unique perspective to working in defense. The team shared their range of capabilities in internal and external communications, explaining their work in graphic design, intranet and website management, video production, social media, and technical editing and writing, delivering high-quality results to every department at SPA.   Each team member discussed their diverse backgrounds from a liberal arts perspective and what led them to find their unique job on the SPA team. With an interactive and engaging presentation, the reviews were positive! The interns, almost all of whom are STEM majors, appreciated learning what goes into creating a robust communications function in the company. The takeaway theme was "explore your options, embrace change, and be open to a career path you might not have thought possible. #WeAreSPA #marketing #communications #interns

Today's Intern Lunch & Learn was presented by SPA Senior Vice President and Division Director David Duryea RDML (USN) Ret., alongside surprise guest Vice President and Deputy Division Director Mike Yang, PMP. The interns shared a meal followed by a discussion on how the groups within the Sea, Land, Air Division support critical national security issues. During the presentation, the interns viewed interesting videos of test events and test blasts. SPA Intern Avery Gabavics said about the event, "The way they both spoke highly about their careers within SPA was encouraging to hear. Thank you Dave and Mike for taking the time to talk to us interns!"
