With the serious electrical grid issues associated with hurricane Beryl, promoting the advancement of remote sensing with UAS systems for cheaper, faster and more efficient UVM plans seems especially relevant. Our take aways from this ISA article include: Using remote sensing with UAS systems can advance the Utility Vegetation Managment (UVM) industry in terms of managing tree risk, especially off-ROW trees. This can be important since many electric utilities cite tree caused/related or vegetation related as the most common type of unplanned interruption with most being attributed to “fall ins” or trees tall enough to fall into the ROW and across or through the electrical conductor. These UAS collection datasets can be used for change detection, tree removal audits, vegetation growth rates and to monitor natural tree failure in the utility forest. LIDAR was found to be ~3X more accurate than photogrammetry and aerial LIDAR inspection outpaced visual inspection by a 4:1 ratio. Using a merged dataset of LIDAR and hyperspectral resulted in 92% tree identification accuracy. It is important in any vegetation/forestry management to know the species and size, quantity of the trees/vegetation the organization is managing. There are benefits and drawbacks of fixed wing UAS vs. multicopter UAS but with the increased speed and collection rate of inspection data in relation to in person collection there are clear benefits of employing UAS. Swift UAS systems have a range of endurance capabilities with swappable, easily integrated payload choices for many aerial survey mission conditions and desired outcomes. About us
Swift Engineering is a product development company with over 30 years of experience designing and building high performance vehicles, specializing in unmanned systems, autonomy, robotics, and advanced composites. Swift was founded in 1983 and has produced over 500 vehicles in its 60,000-sq. ft. advanced design and manufacturing facility. In 2000, Swift Engineering diversified in to aerospace vehicles and has worked on space, aerospace, aeronautical, terrestrial and underwater, manned and unmanned, defense and commercial designs and vehicles. In 2001, Swift Engineering started the development of the Swift KillerBee; a runway independent, 4 ft. wingspan, catapult launch and net recovery UAS. By 2009,this vehicle had a 10-ft. wingspan, 15-hour endurance, and can carry a 60-lb. payload. Swift Engineering sold this asset to Northrop Grumman and it was renamed the Northrop Bat. In continuing to look forward, the Swift020, the first UAS featuring X-Blade Technology™, is the culmination of over 13 years of research and development in UAS, creativity and innovation in the UAV marketspace, and Swift heritage and understanding in unmanned systems. The Swift020 Unmanned Air System (UAS) takes off and lands anywhere like a quad-rotor and transitions to efficient fixed-wing forward flight without additional launch and recovery equipment allowing it to vastly reduce operational time and cost. The Swift020 Unmanned Air System is a family of systems servicing Linear Infrastructure, Oil and Gas, Maritime, Emergency Services, Delivery, Agriculture, Scientific Research, Surveillance and Military/Defense markets. Sometimes we can’t choose so we fly both Swift Accipiter and Swift Crane. Swift Accipiter is one of the easiest entry points into the Group 2 UAS market. Safety and reliability are assured with the use of one of the most proven Group 2 UAS engines on the market, the Cobra AERO, LLC Aero A33N. Swift Crane is an all-electric VTOL with 90+ minutes of endurance with one of the most capable and intuitive autopilots on the market. We are happy to announce our 2024 NASA SBIR Phase 1 Award for Swift Ultra Long Endurance (SULE) platform. “Swift’s previous and continued success with the SULE program has demonstrated our ability not only to plan and create detailed concepts of operations, but to actually perform our missions safely while working within FAA regulations. This experience combined with Swift’s continued relationship with NASA on HAPS programs makes us the ideal and low risk partner for this SBIR.” #swiftengineering #nasa #HAPS #hale #engineering #aerospace #innovation #stratosphere #HALE #endurance

We had a great time last week at the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District exercise. The Swift Crane provided situational awareness in place of manned aviation assets for the entire exercise including vehicle and personnel follows and crew coordination flying multiple integrated flights with other assets. #swiftcrane #sanbernadino #sanbernadinocounty #firefighting #uav #operations #endurance #california #swiftengineering #ems #drones
