SMS group Inc. Mill Health Check & Expert Training at SDI Butler: Last month, SMS group USA held a Hot Strip Mill training and Mill Health Check at the SMS CSP plant from Steel Dynamics, Inc Butler. Thanks to our great relationship with the SDI Butler Hot Strip Mill team, they graciously hosted and supported this effort, offering a detailed tour and theoretical training of their hot rolling processes as well as an in depth safety training for our future SMS experts. The SMS team then provided a thorough Mill Health Check, an effort we hope to replicate throughout our customer base as a way to build proactive and strong partnerships. The concept of the Mill Health Check is to provide an overall evaluation of the Hot Strip Mill conditions from different aspects like Process Stability, Service & Maintenance, Electric and Automation, Digital Tools, Mechanics and Hydraulics. From there, SMS leverages the experience gained on the broad installed basis of our equipment in several locations and provide detailed reports to our customers with the goal of increasing the performance of their equipment and production. Recommendations for short, mid and long-term actions are made where we leverage our strengths and synergies of the newly formed SX group (Automation, Digital and Service Solutions) to support our customers as a life cycle partner. Randy Patterson, SDI Butler Hot Mill Manager stated: “It was a great experience to have SMS group at our site and we gathered at least seven relevant topics with good ideas that we are planning to follow up on going forward. We would be glad to host another mill health check for SMS in the future.” Jack Fantoni, SMS group Mechanical Engineer said of the event: “Randy Patterson and the team at SDI Butler were very gracious hosts that provided a bedrock for a great learning experience for a young engineer. I greatly look forward to participating in more mill health checks in the future to not only continue to assist our customers in our ever growing partnership, but to also become a better engineer through these experiences.” We’re happy to say that this was a valuable experience for all involved and look forward to continuing this effort into the future. #hotstripmill #millhealthcheck #lifecyclepartnership #collaboration #steel

In June 2024, SMS group proudly hosted a three-day event at our US headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA, dedicated to our cold pilger mills (KPW) customers. This engaging event follows the highly successful Cold Pilger Mill Technology Days held in November 2023 in Mönchengladbach, Germany, highlighting our commitment to customer collaboration and innovation. During the event, experts from both Germany and the US presented the latest advancements and best practices on cold pilger mill technology, offering attendees comprehensive insights. Customers had opportunities to engage with SMS experts, addressing their individual plant needs and exploring tailored solutions. 🌈 LGBTQIA+ Voices   We would like to draw attention to the importance of equality, respect and inclusion in the workplace. Today, Paul Monteith, who is part of the global SMS family, shares their story of finding their own sense of belonging at SMS. “When I look back at the start of my career, I used to feel lucky that there was a 'passive acceptance' of me as a gay man. But that is not the same as inclusion, which is about actively including everyone – with all their differences and varying perspectives – and creating and practicing values that protect their rights as individuals and put all employees on an equal footing. On a day-to-day level, this would mean working in an environment where you feel strong within yourself about your sexual orientation or identity, where you know you do not have to avoid certain situations or topics of conversation at work.   True, society is evolving fast and people may feel they are not up to speed on identity or gender issues, or they may have questions they want to ask, but all of this can be dealt with in a positive way if the right conditions are created in the workplace. We are all different in many ways but we are also one team, and being part of a well-functioning team automatically makes each member feel respected and included.
