At Structural Integrity Associates (SIA), we understand our engineers' talent and expertise help the company to grow and succeed.
SIA’s Norman Abrahamson earned the top honor in seismology this year by taking home the 2024 Harry Fielding Reid Medal. First awarded in 1975, the Medal recognizes outstanding seismology and earthquake engineering contributions. The recipient is recognized as a global leader in the field of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA).
Within the seismic hazard community, Norman is known for developing new methodologies as well as refining state-of-the-art practices in ground-motion modeling for crustal and subduction earthquakes, methodologies for assessing and scaling ground-motion time series for engineering applications, validation of 3D simulations, and treatment of uncertainty in PSHA.
Across industry, academia, and independent consulting, Dr. Abrahamson has offered essential knowledge in assessing seismic hazards for nuclear power plants, dams, electric grids and substations, office buildings, water and gas pipelines, high-speed rail lines, tunnels, and bridges across the world. His contributions have significantly impacted the National Seismic Hazard Model Project (NSHMP), which integrates information from seismology, geology, geodesy, and engineering into the national seismic hazard models for the United States and its territories. In the nominations, numerous comments from women working in seismology and across the sciences said Abrahamson’s generosity and commitment to inclusion changed the trajectory of their careers.
We are excited for Dr. Abrahamson's receipt of this highly regarded award. We appreciate being able to work with Norman, as his dedication and work ethic contribute greatly to the company’s overall success.
Congratulations, Dr. Abrahamson!
