About us
Sandy Hook Promise (SHP) is a national nonprofit organization with a mission to end school shootings and create a culture change that prevents violence and other harmful acts that hurt children. Through its life-saving, evidence-informed “Know the Signs” prevention programs, SHP educates and empowers youth and adults to recognize, intervene, and get help for individuals who may be socially isolated and/or at risk of hurting themselves or others. Through nonpartisan policy and partnerships, SHP advances gun safety, youth mental health, and violence prevention education at the state and federal levels that protect all children from gun violence in their schools, homes, and communities. SHP is led by several family members whose loved ones were killed in the tragic mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012. Make the Promise at www.sandyhookpromise.org.

In the wake of two devastating mass shootings in Birmingham, Alabama, that claimed seven lives, Sandy Hook Promise stands in solidarity with the affected community. “These incidents underscore the urgency of taking action. By taking an evidence-based approach that addresses the root causes of violence, learning the warning signs of gun violence, and advocating for comprehensive legislative solutions, we can create safer spaces for all and save lives. Together, we can honor the memory of the victims by working towards a future free from gun violence.” -Nicole Hockley, co-founder and co-CEO of Sandy Hook Promise and mother of Dylan, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. #SandyHookPromise #HonorWithAction #EndGunViolence #ProtectOurKids

One person was killed, and two others critically injured yesterday in a shocking attack at a political rally in Butler, Pennsylvania that authorities are investigating as an assassination attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump. “Gun violence doesn’t care about your political affiliation. It doesn’t care about party lines. It doesn’t care whether you’re a public figurehead or an ordinary person going about your day, whether at the grocery store, ballpark, or a concert. This epidemic touches every single one of our lives and we must come together as a nation to support bipartisan policy solutions that can save lives.” - Mark Barden, co-founder and co-CEO of Sandy Hook Promise and father of Daniel, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. #EndGunViolence #SandyHookPromise

Being a student can be harder and more dangerous than it ever has been. As a result of rising school shootings and suicide rates, students need someone they can turn to for help. Sadly, at-risk students may have unstable relationships with the adults in their lives. A trusted adult is someone who students see as a consistent, caring supporter, and is vital to a student's safety and well-being. Becoming a #TrustedAdult can be a lifesaving impact in your community! #SandyHookPromise #EndGunViolence #ProtectOurKids

Tragic and preventable. As our nation marks another deadly Fourth of July weekend, we stand with grieving families and call for action to #EndGunViolence. “Here in the “land of the free and the home of the brave,” Americans are neither free to live their lives without fear from gun violence, nor are our legislators brave enough to take on this public health epidemic. It is a grave injustice that our lawmakers have not yet passed enough common-sense measures that are proven to save lives.” - Nicole Hockley, co-founder and co-CEO of Sandy Hook Promise and mother of Dylan, who was killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. Join us in demanding change to protect our communities and prevent further senseless losses. #ProtectOurKids #SandyHookPromise

Record numbers of our children are facing unprecedented mental health crises, with depression and anxiety reaching alarming levels. At the same time, gun violence has tragically become the leading cause of death among U.S. kids. This Fourth of July, we reflect on the tragic connection between these crises and call for stronger regulations, safer practices, and proactive community involvement. #ProtectOurKids #SandyHookPromise #EndGunViolence #FourthofJuly
