We’re thrilled to announce that two of our projects won national awards at #AIA24, the annual The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Conference on Architecture & Design. During the AIA Awards gala last Friday, June 7, Bard High School Early College DC, an innovative early college program designed by Perkins Eastman DC in collaboration with DC Department of General Services District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), MCN Build, CMTA, Inc., and community stakeholders, received a 2024 AIA Education Facility Design Award. “It’s so impressive to have a net zero school (targeted) in an urban center renovation,” commented the AIA jurors. “It’s clear the team went to great lengths to involve the students and the community so they would all feel connected.” In addition, The Wharf, a visionary waterfront neighborhood in Southwest DC, was celebrated with a 2024 AIA Regional & Urban Design Award, which recognizes the best in urban design, regional and city planning, and community development. We’re excited to share our urban design concept, Repairing and Reconnecting, developed in collaboration with National Capital Planning Commission and the DC Office of Planning. The study proposes reconnecting the The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to the city, Rock Creek Park and the National Mall; and repairing the damage caused by the construction of I-66 and the E Street Expressway in Foggy Bottom.  The vision proposes connections to iconic city landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial, improved multi modal networks, new park landscapes and locations for future memorials. We’re thrilled to announce that Bard High School Early College received the 2024 Grand Prize Award for Adaptive Reuse from Learning By Design Magazine! Congratulations to DC Department of General Services and District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and our collaborators MCN Build and CMTA, Inc.! Bard High School Early College is the first early college program in DC located east of the Anacostia River. With a mission to increase access and success in higher-education among low-income and historically underrepresented communities, the school provides a tuition-free college program of study. Upon graduating, students receive both a high school diploma and a free Associates in Arts degree from Bard College. Our modernization provides a cutting-edge facility that promotes academic excellence and supports the school’s mission and vision, while simultaneously establishing new standards for sustainable urban school design. By collaborating with the school, government, and community stakeholders, our renovation and addition proves how Net Zero Energy can be achieved with existing facilities through small, impactful strategies. We’re thrilled to announce that Vela (Parcel I) has been selected as a 2024 Washington Building Congress (WBC) Craftsmanship Award winner in the “Metals” category for “Miscellaneous Metal Fabrication.” Designed in collaboration between PEDC, B&M International Steel Co., HITT Contracting Inc., and S&A Structural Engineers, Vela is an eleven-story, mixed-use, residential building located steps from the Navy Yard Metro and Nationals Park at The Yards DC. The building design is Scandinavian-inspired, focusing on the concept of “hygge,” or the feeling of wellness and comfort within the home environment, and is comprised of retail space on the ground floor, roughly 379 residential units with spectacular views across the Anacostia River, and amenities that promote holistic wellness. A “fitness bridge” features a structural steel and glass bridge spanning one hundred feet long and two stories tall on the eighth floor. Class A+ amenity space includes a bridge-top lap pool and sun deck, private dining room and chef’s kitchen, an indoor/outdoor lounge, gaming facilities, and a light-filled glass-enclosed staircase connecting resident spaces in the building. The interior bridge features exposed steel, a vital feature of the initial design coordination to ensure all steel was intentionally placed without compromising the aesthetics of the exposed finished space. B&M worked to coordinate fabrication and logistics for the construction and erection of the bridge. The bridge comprises two large trusses that were constructed on-site, one weighing 81,000 pounds, and a second weighing 105,000 pounds, hoisted into place by a 900-ton crane.
