It was an exciting day for the Hudson Valley community! M&M was proud to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony today for the historic Wurts Street Bridge. Our firm led the preliminary design, final design, and construction support services for this comprehensive rehabilitation project, with the ultimate goal of extending its service life for another 50 years. Congratulations to all involved on a successful completion and we look forward to seeing this bridge active in the community once again!
Today, NYSDOT Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez, alongside NYS Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, Congressman Pat Ryan, NYS Senator Michelle Hinchey, and local representatives, announced the reopening of the Wurts Street Bridge. Closed since 2020, this historic landmark in Kingston, connecting to Port Ewen in Ulster County, has been rehabilitated to enhance safety and resilience for travelers. The restoration underscores Governor Hochul’s commitment to investing in projects that improve public safety, reconnect communities, and promote well-being across New York State. Commissioner Dominguez emphasized, “This iconic bridge has united Kingston and Port Ewen for over a century, and with this project's completion, we ensure it continues to do so safely for years to come.” More here: https://on.ny.gov/3xDHtn7

"The Parkersburg Memorial Bridge opened in 1955. Spanning the Ohio River, it connects Parkersburg, W.V. with Belpre, Ohio. The bridge has undergone minor maintenance projects, but no major work. Much of the bridge remained original, including the concrete-filled steel grid deck. In 2021, United Bridge Partners bought the bridge from Parkersburg, along with the requirement to rehabilitate it and keep the structure open for at least another 50 years. To rehabilitate the bridge, UBP teamed with Modjeski and Masters as engineer of record, Burgess & Niple as owner’s engineer, and Kokosing as general contractor." Read more about the Parkersburg Bridge rehabilitation in an article written by Daniel McCaffrey featured in the May/June issue of Roads & Bridges. #bridgerehabilitation #bridgeengineering #constructionengineering

Much of the bridge remained original, including the concrete-filled steel grid deck. To extend its life, Parkersburg load posted the bridge at 10 tons in 2017. However, a significant rehabilitation project was needed, but it would be cost-prohibitive. Today we celebrate a landmark anniversary for D.C. icon The Theodore Roosevelt Bridge! Turning 60 years old, this architectural marvel has become a symbol of the region connecting Virginia and the nation's capital across the Potomac River since 1964. The bridge was designed by our team and is a haunched multi-span steel girder structure with 6 lanes, plus an additional interchangeable lane in the middle, operated daily to add capacity in the direction of rush hour traffic. Happy 60th, Theodore Roosevelt Bridge!

We are excited to highlight our work with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory inspecting the Green Bank Telescope, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope! We were brought in under a multi-year contract to develop a full-fledged inspection plan and procedure starting in the early 2000s. We created a custom record-keeping database for managing the inspection process, developed a customized inspection plan (utilizing rope access techniques) to ensure all components were inspected, recorded the inspection findings, and programmed ongoing maintenance. We are proud to help ensure this innovative structure’s continued integrity and a long operational lifespan.

Happy birthday to founder Frank Masters! Frank began working for Ralph Modjeski in 1904 when he was just 21 years old as an assistant inspector of structural steel and wound up overseeing all his East Coast steel mill inspection work. Frank and Ralph would form the partnership of Modjeski and Masters in 1924 which was the foundation for the firm that we know today. Your legacy lives on, Frank!
