While electric vehicles cost about 30% more to repair after an accident than their gas-powered counterparts, Mitchell data finds that EVs are no more likely to be totaled than gas-powered cars. Insurers wrote off 9.93% of damaged EVs as total losses in the first quarter of this year—almost the same as the 9.51% figure for internal-combustion-engine (ICE) cars. Electric vehicle costs have been coming down, with the average price of a new model almost 10% lower than a year ago and used models down 32%. However, findings from Mitchell's research, as reported in Fortune, show that average repair costs were 29% higher for EV owners than their ICE-owning counterparts, and the average repair took almost twice as long.
