Providing the best-proven method for decarbonization in the iron and steel industry- direct reduction.
About us
At Midrex, we believe two things to be true: our world needs the steel industry, and the steel industry cannot survive unless we develop a way to produce high-grade steel while minimizing greenhouse gases. Our solution is the MIDREX Direct Reduction Process, a method for producing direct reduced iron (DRI), an efficient and sustainable feedstock for various steel making technologies. Using hydrogen to remove the oxygen from iron ore without melting, the Midrex process can reduce CO2 emissions in ironmaking to nearly zero. Every day, our Midrex team is working to create a sustainable future for iron and steel, designing, building, and supporting DRI plants all around the world. Not only are these plants more energy efficient and sustainable, they’re also the most profitable to own and operate, creating new opportunities for iron and steel makers. Since 1987, Midrex has been the world leader in direct reduction technology, offering the best-proven method for decarbonization in the iron and steel industry available today. Our rapid growth is transforming the steel industry and our planet. And none of it would be possible without our people, who bring vision, compassion, and extraordinary expertise to this work every day. By continuing to recruit the brightest minds in engineering, research and development, and business, we will continue to expand our footprint, offering the most sustainable solutions to our global customers.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the ArcelorMittal/Nippon Steel India IV plant in Hazira, Gujarat! Since its start-up in July 2004, this MIDREX plant has been a cornerstone of innovation and productivity in the steel industry. The IV Module, equipped with MIDREX technology, produces HBI/HDRI with a capacity of 1.0 Mt/y. In 2023, it set new annual productivity and electricity consumption records and achieved a new monthly production record in May. Around the world, Arcelormittal plants continued to break records in 2023; AM ACINDAR has achieved the most production from a 5.5-meter MIDREX Shaft Furnace to date, with over 34 Mt of CDRI produced, AM Canada Module 1 operated a record 8542 hours, with a 99.6% plant availability.
