REVERSING ORGAN FAILURE: In spring 2023, Mark Powers went to a Grand Rapids emergency room, where doctors discovered a massive pulmonary embolism. He had open heart surgery the next day, but they could not completely remove the blood clots within his lungs. In a final attempt to save his life, Powers was placed on ECMO, a machine that temporarily pumps blood and oxygen until a more definitive treatment can be completed. Weeks later, he was transferred to U-M Health, where Dr. Jonathan Haft performed a surgery to remove the remaining clots. Powers later regained full organ function, returned to work in 2024 and married his longtime partner, Julie. "The team at U-M gave me a second shot at life and I don’t plan on wasting it,” Powers said. "I’m appreciative of every second that I get to spend with my wife, daughter and all my loved ones.” Read Mark's full story: https://michmed.org/DnMWY
