On June 26, MACP and its partners [Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM), Greentown Labs, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, Mass Mobility Hub, NECEC, The Engine Accelerator] had the pleasure of hosting a Competitiveness Conversation on "Massachusetts Climatetech Leading the Charge" featuring a panel of 4 climatetech CEOs sharing their experiences and insights on the industry in the commonwealth. We were honored to be joined by Hudson Gilmer, CEO of LineVision. A few key points of his included: 🧠💸📣Massachusetts is the best place to start a climate tech company, thanks to what Hudson calls the "three B's" – brains, bucks, and boosters. 🌱The Massachusetts climatetech ecosystem is robust and growing. Organizations like Greentown Labs, Clean Energy Ventures, and Massachusetts Clean Energy Center have laid a strong foundation, and with increased funding the ecosystem can thrive even more. 🗺️We would do well to learn from New York, including the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, which provides a specific roadmap for achieving ambitious climate goals. Likewise, we would benefit from the level of funding that NYSERDA is investing into climatetech. 🏠 Additionally, addressing the high cost of living (particularly housing) is crucial to attracting and retaining the state's skilled workforce. See the short video clip below to hear why Hudson believes Massachusetts is the best place for climatetech innovation.

We were honored to be joined by Julie Bliss Mullen, CEO of Aclarity. A few key points of hers included: 💧 Aclarity has benefited immensely from Massachusetts' supportive ecosystem and has received significant support from organizations like Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and MassVentures. This backing has helped the company to build a strong team and advance its technology. 🌎 Massachusetts is an ideal place to attract the best talent. Julie highlighted the state's ability to draw professionals passionate about solving massive environmental and public health challenges, which has been crucial for Aclarity's mission. 🏛️ While Massachusetts has been a leader in research, the state has more work to do in developing frameworks and roadmaps - other jurisdictions are luring away climatetech companies with piloting opportunities. 💰 Julie also emphasized the need for more funding, pointing to California's $20 million allocation to water technology as an example for Massachusetts to follow. Streamlining the funding process is also crucial to expedite the deployment of critical technologies. Watch the short video clip below to hear why Julie is thrilled for Aclarity to be in Massachusetts.

We were honored to be joined by Joshua Aviv, CEO of SparkCharge. A few key points of his included: 👥 Massachusetts has a talented pool of experienced professionals knowledgeable about building cleantech companies, which was a major reason that SparkCharge made the decision to stay in the state and hire locally. 🚗 The Massachusetts climatetech ecosystem is growing: organizations like Greentown Labs and MassRobotics have laid a strong foundation, and we have new organizations like Mass Mobility Hub, which is focused on transportation and mobility, that will help attract more startups to the state. 📈 The Massachusetts climatetech ecosystem is not only growing, but with the right investment (including increased access to capital) can thrive. See the short video clip below to hear why Josh describes Massachusetts as the "superpower" that supported SparkCharge's success.

A recent Boston Globe editorial titled “Sadly, the MCAS ballot-question battle is on,” urges voters to take a hard look at the facts about the measure that would eliminate MCAS as a graduation requirement. It points out that the requirement that students pass MCAS to graduate “has been a lynchpin of the education-reform efforts of the past three-plus decades, which have helped establish Massachusetts schools as among the top-performing in the country.” The editorial sets the record straight on “monumentally misleading claims” that proponents of the measure have used to make the case for it and highlights that Governor Maura Healey, House Speaker Ron Mariano, a former schoolteacher, and Senate President Karen Spilka, a onetime social worker, have all come out against it. “They have all decided the public educational interest dictates their opposition.” MBAE agrees that voters should reject this proposal. Requiring that students pass MCAS to graduate high school ensures that there is a consistent, minimum academic standard of achievement to earn a high school diploma in Massachusetts. Getting rid of that requirement will mean there will be no consistent standard for awarding a high school diploma and districts will no longer be required to ensure all students meet a minimum standard. MACP, represented by Rebecca Davis, is honored to be a member of the Healey-Driscoll Administration's recently announced Energy Transformation Advisory Board. The formation of the board is a pivotal step which underscores Massachusetts' commitment to a sustainable future, and positions us at the forefront of the clean energy revolution. The Advisory Board, comprised of a diverse coalition including utilities, technology innovators, business leaders, environmental justice advocates, and more, will play a crucial role in guiding the state's transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. Together, we will advise the newly established Office of Energy Transformation (OET) in accelerating the electrification of buildings and transportation, ensuring affordability, equity, and resilience across the electric grid. Under the leadership of OET Executive Director Melissa Lavinson, the Advisory Board will focus on three priority areas: 🛳️ transitioning from the Everett LNG Terminal, 🏭 decarbonizing peaker plants, and 💵 developing alternative financing mechanisms for the energy transition. These initiatives align with Massachusetts' ambitious goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Read more about the advisory board: https://lnkd.in/e6D6RdQk We look forward to leveraging our collective expertise and passion to drive meaningful change, supporting Massachusetts' position as a leader in clean energy innovation. #CleanEnergy #EnergyTransformation #Sustainability #ClimateAction #MassachusettsLeadership #MALeadingtheCharge

Thanks for covering our (Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Environmental League of Massachusetts (ELM), Greentown Labs, Massachusetts Business Roundtable, Mass Mobility Hub, NECEC, The Engine Accelerator) panel (Joshua Aviv, Shreya Dave, Hudson Gilmer, Julie Bliss Mullen, Rebecca Davis) on climate tech!
For this week's Bold Types, I checked in with Marty St. George, a BC High kid who grew up to be one of the aviation industry's busiest executives. He has been recruited back to JetBlue by its new CEO to help restore it to profitability -- and maybe even take back the top spot at Logan Airport that the airline ceded to Delta. Other fun stuff in this roundup: Herb Chambers sponsors the 4th of July celebrations this year after Morgan Stanley takes a pass, the CEO succession game begins at Citizens Bank, the region's climate-tech startup CEOs say the vibrant ecosystem here outweighs cost of living woes, and Hill Holliday launches a new $6 million tourism campaign for Massachusetts. https://lnkd.in/eeibKyNw via @BostonGlobe
