Enhancing San Diego's cultural vitality by presenting & producing a dynamic range of performing arts
About us
Located at the brand new Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, La Jolla Music Society is one of the most prestigious and highly-respected multi-disciplinary presenting organizations in the United States. A leading contributor to San Diego’s cultural vitality since its founding nearly forty years ago, LJMS’ October-to-May presenting season offers a rich variety of artistic experiences: internationally-renowned orchestras on tour in the United States; chamber music performances ranging from solo piano recitals to string quartets and early music specialists; a wide-ranging jazz series; and dance performances in ballet, modern and post-modern idioms. LJMS' signature event each year is the nationally-acclaimed SummerFest; a three-week music festival of performances, live broadcasts, open rehearsals, educational encounters, pre-concert talks, and social events. All of LJMS’ activities support extensive education and outreach programs. LJMS brings into local communities world-class classical music, modern dance, jazz and ballet in eight different venues throughout the county. These performances are of artists who regularly appear at Carnegie Hall, Royal Festival Hall in London, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, and indeed on the great stages of the world. Simply put LJMS’ motto is “We Bring the World to San Diego” …and LJMS brings the best the world has to offer.

Juneteenth is a day that celebrates freedom. In honor of today, we are re-sharing a Synergy performance from 2021: “American Perspectives I: Goin’ Home.” The music performed at this concert honors African American spirituals. These are songs that communicated both sorrow and hope and served as a code to escape for freedom. Spirituals constitute one of the largest and most significant forms of American folksong and continue to inspire composers and artists today. https://lnkd.in/ghn2trus

It’s Official: The City of San Diego has declared May 22 as “Community Music Center Day.” A similar honor is shared by Serafin Paredes, our tireless program director of 25 years. The County of San Diego has declared May 20th as “Serafin Paredes Day.” These announcements were part of last night’s celebration at Logan Memorial Educational Campus, home of our Community Music Center (affectionately called “the CMC”), where our after-school music education program has reached its 25th anniversary. Students performed throughout the evening, accompanied by words from our community partners at The Chicano Federation and San Diego City Council President Pro Tem Joe LaCava. Congratulations to the students who performed last night (you each did an amazing job!) and the incredible CMC educators who guide them. Additional thanks to our friends at Café Coyote and Chateau La Jolla for providing delicious additions to the event. Cheers to 25 more years of making music in Logan Heights and beyond! . . . .
