#ICYMI – A recent paper that was published in BMJ’s Journal of Medical Genetics shows that carrier screening via an expanded panel was effective in identifying more than DOUBLE the amount of at-risk reproductive partners when compared with an ethnicity-based approach! Here’s why this matters: 🔬Identifying more couples at-risk means more families can make informed reproductive choices. 🔬Comprehensive community-wide carrier screening can lower the prevalence of genetic diseases within a population. Igentify is proud of Doron M Behar, MD, PhD, Galit Delmar, Ellie Portugali and Tova Hallas, MSc for facilitating this important research that is so fundamental for those planning a family. What does “informed consent” mean and why is it important in medicine? Informed consent is the process of educating patients about a healthcare decision in such a way that they understand the risks, benefits and implications of that decision and empowers them to make it in a way that most aligns with their values. Not from a position of ignorance or out of helplessness. Informed consent is required by law for genetic testing, due to the psychological implications that test results might have, such as incidental findings. In reality though, most informed consent is rushed, partial and boils down to a 1-2 min conversation with a healthcare provider and patient signature on a convoluted legal document. Dan Ariely brings this issue to light in a recent post regarding informed consent procedures before surgery: https://lnkd.in/eDabeDkp From the public discussion that ensued in the comments, it’s clear that there is much to improve across almost all areas of medicine. Let’s change this.

Knowledge is power. This couldn’t be truer when it comes to family planning and having the ability to make informed reproductive choices. Traditionally, an ethnicity-based approach has been taken with carrier screening. However, this approach is time-consuming, costly, and susceptible to mistakes due to inaccurate patient self-reporting. In a recent paper that was published in BMJ's Journal of Medical Genetics, we show that carrier screening via an expanded panel was effective in identifying more than DOUBLE the amount of at-risk reproductive partners when compared with an ethnicity-based approach!
