As part of a routine for new babies and new moms, after 24 hours of being released from the hospital, mom and baby must have a check-up with a specialist. In these appointments, many questions are asked, tons of information and instructions are shared as well as a beautiful new baby, who might that day not be as calm and quiet as we like! Handling a call when you have a newborn on the line with their parents, sometimes first-time parents, can be a challenging environment. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you handle these calls like a pro: Be prepared for the call: Most mom-baby calls are meant to give and receive amounts of information, as well as questions are being constantly asked. Remember to familiarize yourself with the situation and the adequate vocabulary. Take pauses between interpretations: In mom-baby calls, the environment tends not to be ideal for interpreting. Sometimes we have a baby who is asleep but sometimes we find a baby who is crying. Keep calm and take small pauses to wait out any distractions. Maintain calm: Remain calm and collected during the call. Mom-baby calls can become stressful. Situations can become sensitive or urgent, as well as we can find ourselves in an environment where we can be easily overstimulated by noises that interfere as children are unpredictable. Take a breath, keep calm, and continue to do your best out of the situation. Manage the flow of communication: If there are multiple speakers or interruptions, politely request that individuals speak one at a time and allow you to interpret accordingly. This helps maintain clarity and accuracy. Make sure everyone is on the same page: If there are complex terms or medical jargon, make sure to confirm both parties understand what the other is saying. These calls might have first-time moms, who might have absolutely no idea what our clients might be trying to say or explain. Make sure everybody understands each other. Be patient and respectful: Remain patient, especially during tense or emotional moments. Treat all participants with respect! We are here to ensure everyone feels comfortable, heard, and understood. Our main goal is always: communication

We at Homeland Language Services are immensely proud of our recent training project for Puerto Rico interpreters! 🇵🇷 Our commitment to excellence drives us to support our interpreters in becoming the best in their field. Over three weeks, we trained experienced consecutive interpreters in simultaneous interpretation, focusing on critical topics such as natural disasters, man-made disasters, cyber-attacks, hazardous materials, public health emergencies, and the medical management of CBRNE events. With 8 dedicated students and 3 expert trainers, the training included three 1.5-hour cases each week, plus 3 extra classes for those needing additional support. We provided valuable resources such as glossaries, flashcards, videos, live practice, and personalized feedback. Interpreting can be intense, especially when managing a large influx of information. To stay on top, it’s crucial to maintain focus and employ techniques for handling dense content. Emphasize active listening and jot down key points to keep track of essential details. If you miss something, don’t hesitate to ask for a repetition. Do it smoothly by saying, "Could you please repeat that?" or "Can you clarify that last point?" This ensures accuracy and shows your commitment to delivering a precise interpretation. Remember, clarity is key, and asking for a repeatition is a sign of professionalism, not a flaw. #interpreter #tipoftheday #languageservice
