The U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) will remove a question about race from the Kidney Donor Profile Index (KDPI) that "dishonors African American/Black donors." The National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology on the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network applauded plans to remove this race-based indicator in the KDPI that measures the suitablilty of donated kidneys for transplantation. This will increase the availability of kidneys, thus improving the chances for nearly 90,000 people who remain on the national kidney transplant waitlist. GLI celebrates alongside the #kidney community in this move, which both honors donors and increases hope for #patients. Based on our shared expertise, Global Liver Institute and the National Alliance for Caregiving are proud to collaborate in providing recommendations to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation to improve the proposed Increasing Organ Transplant Access (IOTA) Model by providing additional #caregiver support. 🤝 This model tests whether performance-based incentives for kidney transplant hospitals can increase #access to #kidneytransplants while preserving quality of care and reducing Medicare costs. 🏥 The proposed IOTA Model will eventually affect other organ transplantation, including #livertransplants. Our recommendations address the systemic gaps that affect #caregivers ➡️ so they are better equipped to care for transplant patients ➡️ to ultimately improve the performance of transplant systems within the new model. ✉️ https://lnkd.in/gtCsnyYT #TransplantTuesday #HealthcareAccess #KidneyTransplant #LiverTransplant #ESRD

OU Health completed #Oklahoma's first #livertransplant to treat an aggressive form of #bileduct cancer. The new service could provide options for some #patients who will no longer have to leave the state to receive care. Now, eligible Oklahomans can be placed on a #transplant waitlist and can receive one once they match with a donor. Only about 20 % to 30% of patients can receive surgical treatment because the disease is usually too advanced when they receive a diagnosis. Dr. Narendra Reddy Battula, a #transplant surgeon at OU Health, said the operation requires a lot of planning, including factors like the availability of #donor organs and whether patients can take the anti-rejection pills after they receive the transplant. Battula said he’s glad OU Health is providing other Oklahomans with an option that can significantly improve their survival rates. He said the transplant is an achievement for the #cancer center, which used to have to refer patients to specialists in Texas. “It's a serious disease, and time is of essence, and I think they should be served better at their local hospitals,” Battula said. https://lnkd.in/g-ruycmu #transplanttuesday #transplantation #organtransplant #liverhealth #liverdisease #raredisease #donatelife

With proper treatment, people with Wilson’s disease can live long, healthy lives. However, they often experience unacceptable gaps in care and systemic barriers that prevent them from accessing support. Advocates for Wilson’s disease play a crucial role in engaging with policymakers, and calling for changes to ensure people living with the condition receive the care they need. Today the Wilson’s Disease Policy Network, for which The Health Policy Partnership (HPP) acts as secretariat, has launched a toolkit to support Wilson’s disease advocates in demanding policy change. The toolkit comprises a suite of resources developed with Network members which aims to help advocates around the world identify, plan and deliver their goals. Inspiring and educational case studies on successful initiatives – from awareness-raising walks to meetings between policymakers and people with Wilson’s disease – have also been included. The toolkit builds on the Network’s prior work from 2023, which identified six priority policy areas that needed to be addressed to improve access to care and support. This work was endorsed by eight specialist organisations, including the Global Liver Institute and the European Liver Patients' Association - ELPA’ Association. The full toolkit can be accessed below: https://lnkd.in/eTCxpEP8

In #France, 80% of new #livercancer cases occur in men. Unfortunately, it's often diagnosed late because symptoms are silent until advanced stages, with only 25% caught early enough for a cure. The rise in #liver cancer cases in France is closely linked to #cirrhosis caused by excessive alcohol consumption in most instances. Drawing from a wealth of studies and the perspectives of community experts, GLI's "Global State of Liver Health" report defines and analyzes the landscape of #LiverHealth around the world. 🌍 #LiverHealthisPublicHealth #PublicHealth #LiverHealth

Earlier this month, Global Liver Institute CEO and Founder, Donna Cryer, was a panelist at AcademyHealth's 2024 Annual Research Meeting's "Advancing Research to Improve Healthcare Equity" in #Baltimore, Maryland The panel detailed the importance of: 1️⃣ patient-centered organizations 2️⃣ the research uniquely combining high-value care and equity rather than treating them as separate issues 3️⃣ accountability and governance included in said research -- so the field could improve the implementation of research results while encouraging partnerships between health systems and other organizations. #Globalpolicy #liverdisease #patientadvocacy #livercommunity #healthcare #equity #health #advocacy
