This greatly enhances parameter sweeping and design optimizations where multiple iterations are needed. Running numerous mode analyses for different waveguide designs is a common task for photonic engineers. While a single-mode solve is quick, the time adds up when multiple solves are needed. 🔥 With Tidy3D 2.7.0, we’ve taken this to the next level! Mode analysis can now be performed in parallel, too. Users can submit an entire batch of mode solver tasks, and we'll run as many as possible simultaneously, saving you even more time. 🔍 A typical example is investigating waveguide mode dispersion as a function of waveguide geometry, such as width.     🚀 𝗧𝗶𝗱𝘆𝟯𝗗 𝗘𝗠𝗘 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 🚀 The highly anticipated 𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 (𝗘𝗠𝗘) 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗿 was officially launched last week with 𝗧𝗶𝗱𝘆𝟯𝗗 𝟮.𝟳.𝟬. 🎉 EME is a powerful numerical technique in computational electromagnetics, particularly for analyzing waveguide and fiber structures. This method efficiently solves Maxwell's equations by decomposing the electromagnetic field into a sum of eigenmodes. The method involves dividing the structure into sections, solving for the modes in each section, and then matching the fields at the interfaces between sections. We all know Tidy3D’s FDTD solver is ultrafast, but EME offers some key benefits over FDTD, particularly for some electromagnetic issues. EME is often more computationally efficient (meaning a much lower FlexCredit cost) than FDTD for structures with long but slowly varying cross-sections, such as waveguide tapers, directional couplers, and MMIs. The image below showcases the EME simulation of a linear waveguide taper. One often needs to perform a parameter sweep to find the length of the taper that yields sufficiently low loss. Here are just a few key highlights: 🚀 The highly anticipated eigenmode expansion (EME) solver is released! It’s a great addition to the FDTD solver, and users can perform long-mode propagation problems at a much lower cost! 📡We are expanding into the RF and microwave frequencies! Introducing the microwave plugin enables characteristic impedance calculation of transmission lines with our new 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿. Simulation now also accepts LumpedElementType, including the new LumpedResistor. More RF/microwave features are on the way! 🛠️ Inverse design has always been an integral part of Tidy3D. With 2.7.0, automatic differentiation is supported natively in Tidy3D components through 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱, making 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 even more flexible and user-friendly.
